The 42-year ban on the book The Golden Son of the Kadazan about late Sabah politician Peter Mojuntin still applies, the Home Ministry said, adding that however, it was currently in the process of reviewing the ban.

In a written reply to a question posed on Aug 25 by Darell Leiking (Warisan-Penampang), the Home Ministry confirmed that the book was subject to a Prohibition Order in accordance with the Internal Security Act 1960 and prohibited on June 19, 1978, due to its potential to disrupt national harmony.

"However, the ministry has taken the initiative to make a study and review of the publication as well as examine every aspect from a security and legal standpoint and consult experts in related fields before any decision on it can be made," the Home Ministry said.

The book was written by former Bandar Hilir assemblyperson Bernard Sta Maria of the DAP and chronicles the life of the charismatic Kadazan politician who perished in the tragic plane crash of June 6, 1976, which also claimed the life of chief minister Fuad Stephens.

Mojuntin, who was the municipal administration minister in Stephens' Berjaya government, was known for his defence of religious freedom and Kadazan rights.

Sta Maria's book was believed to be banned for its unflattering depiction of former Sabah chief minister Mustapha Datu Harun and the portrayal of religious tensions between Christians and Muslims in the state.

The Internal Security Act under which it was prohibited has since been repealed.

Mojuntin is commemorated by a large statue in Donggongon, Penampang, which is also home to a secondary school named in his honour - SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin.
