PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian student who was jailed in the UK for possession of child pornography has returned to limelight, after it was revealed that he has enrolled for a postgraduate course at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).
Nur Fitri Azmeer Nordin, who served time in prison in the UK, had initially joined UKM to pursue his Master’s degree, but was promoted to a PhD course at the university’s school of mathematical science.
“He was doing his Master’s for two semesters but was upgraded to a PhD course as he was an excellent and qualified candidate to join the PhD course,” a source in UKM told FMT.
Several social media users are unhappy with the development, and even posted remarks telling the public to “be careful”.
Nur Fitri was sentenced to five years jail in 2015 after he pleaded guilty in a London court for keeping over 30,000 images and videos of child pornography.
British police had then said that the files he kept were the “most extreme material” they had come across.
Nur Fitri is considered a math genius, and won a Mara scholarship to study at London’s Imperial College in 2012.
He represented Malaysia in the International Mathematical Olympiad in 2011. However, he lost his study loan following his conviction.
He was extradited to Malaysia after serving a reduced jail sentence from 18 months to nine.

  1. Possession of child pornogeaphy is a serious offence because 1 - it may be a sign of such tendencies in the person 2 - being a downloaded of such materials creates a market for the creation of such illicit items, which definitely involves exploitation and violence against children.

    He paid the price.
It is also worth pointing out there was never any evidence of him actually being involved in acts of violence , exploitation or assault.

He does not deserve to be penalised for life.

  2. Talking about sex crimes Perak assemblyman Paul Yong faces a daunting defence in court.

Oftentimes in rape cases the “smoking gun” would be DNA found on the woman’s private parts. But working as a housemaid for a married couple the accuser would have easy access to DNA material, if you stretch your imagination just a wee bit.

The stakes are high, and RM100,000 is a small price to pay for the rewards.
