ReplyDeleteIt is interesting that our Parliament will have an emergency debate over this new Israeli law that Israel is “an exclusive Jewish nation” ie not “inclusive” of people of other faiths like Muslims or Christians. The new law also recognises only Hebrew as the official language and downgrades Arabic, which was an official language, to a “special status” language.

KUALA LUMPUR: An emergency motion to debate the contentious issue of Israel's recent Nation State Law was tabled in Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday (July 25).
The motion under Standing Order 18(1) was moved by Nurul Izzah Anwar (PH-Permatang Pauh), who said the move by Israel would deny statehood for Palestinians while resulting in greater hardship for its people.
Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said he received notice on Nurul's proposed motion on Monday (July 23) and was satisfied that it fulfilled the necessary criteria to warrant debate.
He then set aside 30 minutes for Nurul to raise the matter and 30 minutes for the Government to reply.
He added that the motion would be debated at Parliament's special chambers at 2.30pm.
Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (BN-Ayer Hitam) suggested that the motion is to be taken up as one voice by all MPs, which Nurul agreed.
International media reported Friday (July 20) that the Israeli Parliament had passed a controversial law which categorised the country as an exclusive Jewish nation.
The Foreign Ministry, in a statement on Monday (July 23), said Malaysia urged the international community to take immediate action to call upon Israel to repeal the racist and oppressive law and policy.
"Israel's move will only complicate and undermine peace efforts towards achieving a just and comprehensive resolution to the Palestinian conflict," it said.
Wisma Putra added that the legislation, adopted by 62 votes to 55, deemed the land of Israel as the historical homeland of the Jewish people and that the right to exercise national self-determination in the state of Israel is unique to the Jewish people.
It also declared Hebrew as the official language and downgraded the Arabic language to only "special status", it said.

I don't see any good guys in the conflict. It has nothing to do with Malaysia.

Of the Petroleum producing states, basically only Sabahans voted for Pakatan during GE14. I personally don't see why Pakatan should take such a painful path to fullfill an offer to people who overwhelmingly (except for Sabah) rejected Pakatan Harapan's offer.

DeleteOn the very day that our Parliament, both government and opposition, wanted to table an emergency motion to debate Israel's move to declare itself a Jewish state we have this MP making this remark about Malaysia. Can anyone see any difference between what Israel is legislating to what Malaysia already practices: one predominant race, one predominant religion, one predominant language? I see hypocrisy written all over it.

It all started when the Pasir Salak MP accused DAP of not being fair to all races.

KUALA LUMPUR: There was a tense moment in the Dewan Rakyat today after Barisan Nasional’s Tajuddin Abdul Rahman accused DAP of not being fair to all races, saying the party supported the “Malaysian Malaysia” concept, a motto used in the 1960s by those opposed to affirmative action favouring the Malays.
“That is not fairness. We (BN) help those who need help… Indians, Malays, Chinese and others. There is no racism,” said the Pasir Salak MP in the Dewan Rakyat today.
Pakatan Harapan’s Kota Melaka MP Khoo Poay Tiong then stood up in protest, saying DAP’s struggle was about defending the rights of all communities.
To this, Tajuddin replied: “Don’t just talk, you are saying something different than what is in your heart. We know your agenda.”
Khoo then said Tajuddin should study history, to which the Umno leader said that history would show that the country belonged to Malays.
“You talk about history, but this is Malay land, you know,” he said.
The argument continued as Willie Mongin (PH-Puncak Borneo) joined the fray.
“This is Malaysian land, not Malay land,” Mongin said.
Deputy Speaker Rashid Hasnon later urged Khoo and Mongin not to interrupt Tajuddin.

Paying royalty only makes sense when there is a profit. Isn't that a requirement to be Shariah compliant?
ReplyDeleteIf the cost of production of oil is 25 dollars per barrel in Malaysia and the global price of oil is also 25 dollars (as it was a couple of years ago) does that mean Petronas still has to pay 20% royalty based on revenue and operate at a loss? Or will the 4 states pay 20% to Petronas and give Petronas at least a 20% margin to cover expenses which the states don't have to pay?
If we pay 20% royalty based on revenue, since oil production is on a production sharing basis with the oil majors Shell, ExxonMobil etc all the agreements will have to be re-negotiated. They will likely move elsewhere as Malaysian will be deemed not attractive. The states are shooting themselves in the foot.

Kelantan and Trengganu being part of Malaya are actually not entitled since they are not Sovereign States like Sabah and Sarawak.
It's not only the Petroleum Act needs amendment, the Constitution also will need to be changed and changing the Constitution needs 2/3 majority which the PH Govt may not have at present.
Looks like it may be a long time before this PH promise can be fulfilled and the blame surely goes to BN and PAS supporters for not giving PH the necessary 2/3 majority in Parliament.
