It's not new

From Reuters:

Exclusive - Indonesian Islamist leader says ethnic Chinese wealth is next target (extracts):

The leader of a powerful Indonesian Islamist organisation that led the push to jail Jakarta's Christian governor has laid out plans for a new, racially charged campaign targeting economic inequality and foreign investment.

In a rare interview, Bachtiar Nasir said the wealth of Indonesia's ethnic Chinese minority was a problem and advocated an affirmative action programme for native Indonesians, comments that could stoke tensions already running high in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

"It seems they do not become more generous, more fair," the cleric said, referring to Chinese Indonesians, in the interview in an Islamic centre in South Jakarta. "That's the biggest problem."

Ethnic Chinese make up less than 5 percent of Indonesia's population, but they control many of its large conglomerates and much of its wealth.

    1. it starts with their jealousy, then being the unscrupulous;lous exploitative scoundrels they are, they are going to misuse the good name of Islam to pilfer for themselves

  2. The advent of salafism wahabism in Indonesia? Pak Jokowi has to check and control that. It appears that a potential Iraq/Syria of Indonesia is already brewing?

  3. Indonesia's ethnic Chinese population have received brutal treatment several times in the past, the worst being the Java massacre in the aftermath of the 1965-66 coup attempt, and again in 1998. The CIA estimated casualties at 250,000 dead by 1966, but the USA remained silent about it for decades because it suited their anti-communist agenda.

Having said that, I have to say I do not have a good feeling about the ethnic Chinese domination of their economic system, having been to Indonesia many times doing business with them.
It is an exploitative, unsustainable and inequitable system where a small group of people control an almost unimaginable amount of wealth.

I know a family whose idea of weekend shopping is First-Class flights from Jakarta to Singapore or to Perth for the whole family out Friday night, return Sunday night, accommodation in 5 star hotels.

Given that most Indonesians still live in grinding poverty, something will happen to such an economic/ social system - sooner or later, and there is diminishing likelihood that it will end well.

    2. There r unscrupulous sapu-alls ALL over the world.

      They r minority.

There r good Samaritans All over the world.

      They r minority, too!

There r hatred provocateurs promoting their forms of destructiveness among bleeding hearts.

      They, too, r minority!

Any one of the groupings CAN be picked from ANY race & creed, whether in shithole failed states or matured free states.

So, IS yr simplistically silo overviews of the orang kaya Tionghua Indonesia represents the overall cross-section of the orang Tionghua Indonesia?

Maybe just another exhibition of that self-pity political-correctism due to yr (mis)understanding of that elusive Malay psyche!!

Perhaps, it's this form of opinion singularity that reinforces the hatred of the zombies/blur-sotongs alike.

The impulsive hostile behaviour of the zombies/blur-sotongs is a given.

      But....u????

Talk about education down the drain..sigh...

Do remember, history has proven many a time that political-correctness of the bleeding hearts ALWAYS leads to horrendous & non-sensical conflicts/killings!!!!

    3. So u know Indonesia well eh???

Have u experienced the obnoxious indulgences of the other Indonesians (u should know that Indonesians don't like to be classified as Melayu)?

Many of these families behave equally & sometimes over & above those of the orang kaya Tionghua.

The orang kaya Tionghua achieve their economic status, rightly & wrongly, via generations of tireless efforts.

Meanwhile these rich other Indonesians achieve theirs, mostly via power connections & corruption!

Yes, it is an exploitative, unsustainable and inequitable system where a small group of people control an almost unimaginable amount of wealth.

But such scenario cuts across race & religion in Indonesia.

Why didn't those poor & downtrodden Indonesian zombies/blur-sotongs vent their frustration equally??

Instead, they always target the orang Tionghua, rich or poor. In most cases, it's the middle & poor orang Tionghua facing the brute attacks & suffering the most.

Why DIDN'T those attackers target those 'other' rich Indonesians?

Did they concede inevitably that the orang Tionghua r unscrupulous - SIMPLY bcoz they r Chinese of race! No matter how deeply these orang Tionghua have been assimilated with the unique Indonesia culture.

AND thus r easy meat for them to let off the trapped angers.

In these regards, there r similarity with the same counterpart in bolihland.

I personally think the biggest culprit is the fatalistic nature of the Abrahamic faith, especially the later day Islam in approaching equality.

    4. what Monsterball said of a Tionghua family living it high in opulent ostentation describes exactly how some very rich Melayu families of Malaysia live

      what's the difference?

    5. What's the difference in response by the zombies/blur-sotongs?

      Perhaps, none!

      The phenomenon makes possible in bolihland within the Melayu psyche;

Biarkan orang luar masuk ke rumah kita dan meniduri isteri sama anak perempuan kita, jikalau dia asalkan sebangsa/ummat!

      Fatalistic eh???

    7. I am on record strongly condemning the excesses and abuses of the New Economic Policy in Malaysia.

But the subject post above was about Indonesia, I don't recall a single word in the post of "Malaysia", so why did the blog owner suddenly divert the subject ? Bait and switch ?

A quite different social and ethnic dynamic exists in Indonesia.

The Economist Intelligence Unit reckoned that the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia - 5% of the population - controls 80% of Private Sector wealth in Indonesia.
The balance 20% of non-Chinese Indonesian wealth is mostly in the hands of military and political cronies.

The top 5% of the population owning 80% of the wealth is not that unusual for many 3rd World countries, but when the 5% comes from a minority ethnic group, that sets the ground for very ugly racial politics.

By the way, that dynamic does not exist in Malaysia, certainly not to that magnitude
There is poverty in Malaysia, but the stratospheric heights of wealth and the breadth and width of deprivation in Indonesia is of a different order of magnitude. And the concentration of wealth in one small minority group.

Both poverty and wealth are spread more widely across ethnic groups in Malaysia.

KL has its poor areas, but there is no equivalent to the Jakarta slums.

    8. By the way, don't get too upbeat about the ethnic Chinese super-rich in Indonesia as succeeding "by their tireless efforts".

Many of them, no doubt, succeeded through hard work and talent and business acumen.
However, there is a strong element of exploitation and inequity in how they continue to amass their wealth.
Take off your Chinese ethnic lenses for a moment and learn to read the situation in objective terms.

I thought a self-styled "Socialist" as Ktemoc claims to be would have stronger concern for social justice, exploitation and inequity.

Me, I am a Capitalist, but the grossly unfair economic system in Indonesia is too much even for me to stomach.

    9. 2 thingies:

      1) the deprivation in Indonesia is of a different order of magnitude than bolihland bcoz of the DIFFERENT in stage of economical development.

The Pommie had left behind a systematic administration, while the Dutch had left 'nothing'.

This is the biggest legacy contributing factor in the two economic disparity!

      2) how do u reconsult this:

The bottom half of the world adult population owned 1% of global wealth. Moreover, another study found that the richest 2% own more than half of global household assets.

with yr understanding of the concentration of wealth in one small minority group?

      WWIII????

    10. ck u really know how to present yr 'fact' selectively huh, u learn this from the mt liar, n our host kah?

the wealth that u r talking abt r mostly from the affluence country, perhaps in the hand of the majority race, ie white, arab, n lately, chinese. what monster tell is it could be a problem in a country when the majority is living below poverty line while many rich r from the minority race.

u n kt may call this jealousy or racism but the unjust feeling is true n might valid. did u read what the poor peasant did to the 30 mil landowners when ccp come to power?

if given a chance, i oso wan to whack jho low.

      Ehhhh!!!!

      How???? Mana??? Enlighten me pls.

      I'm not wordsmith.

Neither am I an egomaniac who's bruised ego propels him to react worst than 'Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned'!!!!

      That liar's latest - http://www.malaysia-today.net/ge14-is-about-malays-versus-chinese/

IS an attempted overdrive of Goebbels' proportion to incite racial hatred to help ahjibgor's coming erection le.

Talk about main backsides of the blur-sotongs, no one is his match.

I definitely have read about 'the poor peasant did to the 30 mil landowners when ccp come to power'.

It's just a repeat of the history, all over the world. It's NOT limited to China.

In the same vein, just like the current Taiwanese hostile reaction to Chiang Kai-shek's 228 massacre!

It's also an instantaneous mob reaction that occurs when opportunity arises.

I have no answer to this crowd psychology - thus my question of inequality in world wealth distribution to Monsterball.

    12. Interesting twist;

what monster tell is it could be a problem in a country when the majority is living below poverty line while many rich r from the minority race.

Can u look at the big picture by taking the whole Earth as a single entity ke?

      Countless historical events like

      1)The Storming of the Bastille

      2)The land redistribution by CCP

3)Ernesto "Che" Guevara's failef Marxist revolutions in Latin America

Etc...etc r just the fractional fireworks within a 'big' Earth mah.

Sooner or later this form of mob psychology would happen when the pressure is too much to contain.

In this regard those bolihland kleptomaniacs SHOULD be bewared.

The blur-sotongs COULD wake up, T-cell infested or not.

So, despite all the accolades u've crediteded them, ALL of them r still accumulating their wealth via unscrupulous means?

Can yr single example of a single Tionghua family living it high in opulent ostentation a complete representation of all the orang Tionghua of Indonesian?

Could this living style a minority of the minority in reality?

There is also a possibility that the wealth this family displayed is ethically earned. They might be of bad form in showing of their wealth, BUT, it's no crime.

U raise an issue about economic exploitation in Indonesia. U then zero in to a very small minority, the orang kaya Tionghua. U further extrapolate their role in such exploitation by just given ONE example, which could very well be exception than rules!

Meanwhile, u ignore that there r bigger & more solid examples display by the other Indonesian community.

Yr action shorts of saying that all the atrocities done towards the orang Tionghua by the other Indonesian r well deserved!

"Take off your Chinese ethnic lenses"???

    What lenses???

I'm only pointing out yr glaring ignorance (with some pick&choose) about the economic disparity in Indonesia.

I, too, have many friends & associates in Indonesia. Some r super-rich. Many r just so so middle class while many more r just make do just like any other 'lower' Indonesians.

Yr profiling of the minority orang Tionghua IS NOT doing them justice!

Yr bleeding heart effort, coupled with yr silo political-correctness, creates a bigger backslash. This backslash is reflected in the continue scapegoating of the orang Tionghua!!!

BTW, which class of capitalism u subscribed to - the one with laissez faire competition or the one without?
