MGR-ism at its worst!

Look at the following photograph and have a glimpse of why Indian Malaysians have so many problems. Doesn’t matter who that bloke is, as his person, his individuality, his identity are all not important.

Malaysiakini photo

It’s the act of his followers, a display of a combination of adulation, hero-worship, and bodek-ism. Bloke even has a crown – so the (previous) King is dead, OK, long live the (current) King wakakaka.

When Hindraf Uthayamukar was released, he not only received the same sort of reception, full of adulation and idol-worship, but he had to stop people from kissing his feet, the ultimate act of subservience, an act rightfully reserved only for one’s parents and more senior members of the family (like granddad).

Once I saw an Indian colleague demanding of a student (Indian of course) who was the son of a friend of a friend to kiss his feet – it made me sick.

Then we have people rushing to get a snip of Uthayakumar’s hair or beard when he shaved those off.

And we sure know who MGR was, don’t we, and how he was virtually ‘God’ to the Tamils.

Now we have the new political idol of India, Rahul Gandhi, who at a mere 38 is being ‘promoted’ in a personality campaign to succeed 76-year old PM Manmohan Singh, in just 2 years time, all because he carries the Gandhi name.

Manmohan is expected to step down in that time so that the son of Rajiv Gandhi, the grandson of Indira Gandhi and the great-grandson of Jawarhalal Nehru can become PM of India. Whether Rahul is of good enough material to be PM is totally irrelevant.

Don’t laugh because this over-the-top adulation, hero-worship or bodek-ism have spread across to the Malays.

I could be wrong but I suspect the feudalistic obsequiousness could be (Hindu) caste-culture inspired. Indonesians, Thais, Cambodians, Burmese, Laotian who all adopted and share the Hindu culture-religion have the same inclination.

The garlands and corsages have been getting bigger and bigger in direct proportion to the social-political status of the idol, until with a person like, say, Dr Mahathir at the height of his powers, it’s a wonder the garland bestowed upon him by some supporters didn’t require the hoisting mechanism of a crane to place same around the former PM’s neck, and with a safety team of orthopaedist, chiropractor, osteopath, nurses standing by just in case.

And if you had been observant you might have seen Adam and Eve and dozens of animals wandering around in that Garden of Eden pinned on the front of his jacket pocket.

I heard grateful florists in Malaysia also worshipped him as their patron saint ;-)

But these shows have been totally ridiculous and stupid. Why do those people have to descend to such sycophantic obsequious bodek-ism. Makes me cringe with embarrassment.

Time for the Indians to wake up.

  1. If you take a look at all the parliaments in Asian countries you will find that half the members are related to the person they replace. As much as you may not like it cronism is an Asian word. We just have to live with until such time those in position of powe stop emasculating the democratic institutions of government in our part of the world.

We must not personalise national affairs and nationalise personal affairs. Eamalx

  4. A poor imitation of Emperor Bokassa!

And Kayveas deserves it. His capitulation to Ali Rustam and Badawi when told he, PPP and Indians could take a hike clearly shows he has lost all moral authority to lead PPP.

If truth be told, without UMNO/BN Kayveas has no job, salary & perks, position or raeson to wake up in the morning.

Kayveas has left his supporters and Party with not a shred of self respect!

S'gor MB under fire for 'minority' remark

    Rahmah Ghazali & K Pragalath | May 25, 09 7:26pm

Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim today came under fire for certain remarks made during a seminar for city councillors that was held in the secretariat building in Shah Alam last year.

This was revealed by outspoken grassroots PKR leader, A Thiruvenggadam, who alleged that the menteri besar had said that he would not “meet any minority groups” pertaining to lack of job opportunities given to the Indians.

According to Thiruvenggadam, who is also Petaling Jaya Selatan division's deputy chief and PKR-appointed councillor to the PJ city council, he had made numerous attempts to seek an appointment with the menteri besar but to no avail.

Last week, Thiruvenggadam had lashed out at Pakatan Rakyat and its administration in Selangor for continuing to marginalise the Indian community in the state, saying that it is not much different from what Barisan Nasional had done.

He alleged that all promises made by Pakatan leaders, including the menteri besar and PKR president Anwar Ibrahim before the general election in March 2008 to uplift the Indian community remained unfulfilled.

Alam Flora contracts shared out to political parties?

In a statement read out to the press, Thiruvenggadam also claimed that the state government divides waste-concessionaire Alam Flora contracts to political parties - 40 per cent to PKR, 30 per cent to PAS and 30 per cent to DAP.

“This policy is wrong and against good government practice and it will lead to corruption. This system denies further the Indian community from participating in the contracts.

“Worse, the community does not even have any information on it and many councillors in Selangor were surprised with this kind of contract arrangement,” added Thiruvenggadam.

  8. anonymous of 7:38am May 26 - please note that the Tamils of Sri Lanka would be seriously offended by that linkage.

And by the way ... MGR was not even Tamil to begin with but amazingly he held such GOD status in Tamilnad ...

The world is a strange place ... and Kayveas has always irked the hell outta me .. now we got more drama.

This is not even funny ... just seriously sad. In a nutshell the whole Malaysian Political scene is VERY BAD COMEDY ... tragic and gone wrong!

  9. Heroism worship are nothing new to human society. Even post WWI, German people worship Hitler. It is about weakness of society fail to enact individual awareness.

Chinese Taoism philosophy pass along for 2000 years, but few Chinese notice the liberalism value of it. And Gautama Buddha bring up the idea of self-enlightenment,equalities,etc, it failed to take ground in India. Even Bodhidharma of Chan school teaching take ground in China rather than India.

And guess what, even with those two school of teaching, China are still rules under feudalism for thousands of year, and tens of millions get killed in modern day "great leap forward" and literature revolution.
