Pollie Poo in Permatang Pauh

(3) Until the Permatang Pauh by-election takes place on 26 August I’ll share with you one or more Penang Hokkien words, both for my personal improvement as well as to be prepared in case Arif Shah and Anwar have a kongsamkok debate in Penang Hokkien ;-)

These are genuine tulin (not tu larn) Hokkien words peculiar to Penang Island.

Nor t’au chua = literally ‘double headed snake’ = a treacherous person.

Cheah nooi pnooi = literally ‘eat soft rice’ = pimp or pimping.

Boe larm p’ah (sometimes pronounced as 'boe larn p'ah) = literally [sorry, censored, as sweeties and children may be around] but a former Penang political leader was thus described. ;-)

********

Permatang Pauh, as sweetie Joceline Tan of Star Online translated it, is the plain of mangoes.

But I think ‘permatang’ means the rising grounds between rice fields. Whatever, where rice is concerned, farmers need fertilizer. Here’s some, as headlined by Malaysiakini:

PM: Don't politicise DNA bill, where Malaysiakini reported PM AAB urging ‘… all parties not to politicise the DNA Bill 2008 which was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.’

He dismissed the accusation that the bill was submitted with an ulterior motive, namely to fix the de facto PKR leader who’s facing a sodomy charge.

AAB said that the DNA Bill has been planned by the government for a long time, and it was just a coincidence that Anwar Ibrahim’s case requires DNA sampling – wakakaka.

Meanwhile, in Malaysiakini’s 'I voiced it, but I don't support it' Gerakan Party’s Wanita chief Tan Lian Hoe denied that she had urged her party to leave the BN coalition because of Umno’s racial politics.

A day after she was reported by the media for making that ‘daring’ call, she explained that she was merely voicing out the concerns of the grassroots but did not support the call made by the Perak Gerakan delegates during a conference on Sunday – wakakaka.

OK, now a word from a leader of the party that promotes political reforms, known in Malay as reformasi, as well as ketuanan rakyat or supremacy of the people (‘s voice).

Bloke told us in Malaysiakini that If Anwar wins, 13 Sabah MPs will cross over.

Well done, Jeffrey Kittingan – but is it reformasi or deformasi? Ketuanan rakyat? wakakaka.

And Professor Bridget Welsh writing for Malaysiakini asked Who can PAS trust?

In discussing PAS’ dilemma with regards to Anwar Ibrahim, she said the Islamic party’s leaders and members have been regularly asking themselves whether they should trust Anwar to lead, considering his (Anwar’s) leadership style, record in government, character and Islamic credentials.

Well ... there's always kaytee - wakakaka.

Then the Star Online reported that Anwar responded to Ezam’s accusation that he, as former DPM, had practised ‘cronyism’, by challenging Ezam to Name my ‘cronies’.

I heard from an unreliable source ;-) that Dr M was attempting to ring Ezam to suggest using his (Dr M's) 1998 list where the former PM exposed Anwar’s relatives and close colleagues who had benefited from the former DPM’s largesse. wakakaka.

We are informed by Wikipedia that “…The Youth wing of UMNO, headed by Anwar's associate, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, gave notice that it would initiate a debate on ‘cronyism and nepotism’. The response was swift, as Mahathir issued lists of cronies who had benefited from government share allocations and privatizations."

"To the chagrin of Anwar and his allies, several of them were on the list, including Anwar and Zahid …” wakakaka

Aiyo, cheen chnea ch'au loh - hell of a stench - wakakaka!

  1. Hi everyone,

    Many politicians really stink!

This Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is now an UMNO minister!

And I thought this Ezam fellow was the one who claimed that he had 6 boxes of evidence on misdeeds, misdemeneours and corruption of the govt. Now, where's he on the political divide! If what he claims is true, how come he was such a prominent figure in the 1990s reformasi movement. So, at that time he condoned what he all along claim to know about AI.

But, politicians on the other side of the divide are no different. This is the price that the people has to pay for democracy! We can minimise this by being more careful with our votes.

  2. DearKtemoc , Pls check you fact first , do not use sweeping statement, the only list that tie to DSAI is one that belongs to his father , that was before his DPM position.By the way , the list shown by TDM is not a complete list . IT you care pls publish the whole list again.

  5. I posted this comment some days back .Anonymous 8:06 PM,This Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is now an UMNO minister!

Who do you think is the guy I am talking about ? anonymous ?

Regarding some of DSAI's crony buddies who enriched themselves during his tenure as the DPM and who eloped to Singapore and HK after Anwar's fall from grace had also make some minimal contribution. I believe I know quite a lot of them , mostly developers . There was one who was carrying gold to the Middle East , intro by Anwar to them .
In fact there's one pig who was formerly UMNO Youth Chairman who was very close to him . This pig is now a minister in the prime minister's dept .When he was UMNO youth chairman , he was appointed Bank Simpanan Chairman with a monthly renumeration of 50K per month . On top of that , this pig was appointed to about 200 companies as a director , listed as well as unlisted . Imagine just one company paying just 1000 ringgit a month as directorship fees , you can imagine how much money that pig was racking in , all at the courtesy of Anwar Ibrahim for this pig's continued support.

  7. Of course, almost everybody knows that many politicians are stinky.

This is because most normal speak through their mouth, that is, the hole in the head. But not these stinky politicians -- these exalted gentlemen speak through that hole down there, the one between their legs. Which is why every time they speak they make the air around them so unbreathable.

  8. Hi chaptokam,

Wa tua ci peng... pak si boh chow.... chi na che tam kong ko... kong bay loi la.

The actual meaning of Kongsamkok refer to polities between US, Russia and China. Now when we talk about kongsamkokwe it refer to political bullshiting.

On paper the bookies are putting more that 15,000 votes in favour for Anwar, I am taking the bet. I think the majority will be less than 5,000. He will win the Permatang Pauh election but 16th September will come and go as usual with BN still the government. Who want to bet on this?

I also predict that within a year PR will break up.

I am also fed up and very disappointed with our Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng. To date we are still not moving forward. He is more engross in Anwar's causes rather that states affairs. Until now I have not see any Blue Print for Penang coming out from them, they are still using the previous state government's ideas. To camouflage their short coming, they are digging up the previous government doing here and there which side track more fundamental issue, the state infrastructural and economy.

They are talking about changes and wanted the others to change, but not willing to change themselves. They are still that dogmatic in their engagement with the Federal Government, How to get things done? I think, they have to bent and look at a bigger picture with the interest of Penang at heart, to be tactful and diplomatic in their dealing. Sadly those flair are missing.

  9. Kaytee , hope no censorship !

    Prince of Wales Island
I have been living in Penang all my life - also known as “The Prince of Wales Island”, it is an island which was dominated by the Hokkien clans of the Chinese race. Most people here speaks Hokkien dialect. It was the colloquial communication medium in Penang .. and it has been like this for almost a century (ever since the Chinese came to Malaya to mine for tin ores)
But then, the Hokkien dialect in Penang did not sound a wee bit like those originated from China . It was entirely different from the original. Why ? Well, that’s because Penang ’s a multi-cultural place and over the years, the Hokkien dialect somehow had evolved into something different…. into almost like an entirely new language itself. Slangs and shits like that.
Just like what the Americans did to the original King’s English.
So, in conjunction with our national day spirit, I would like to share some of the most commonly used Hokkien slang in Penang .. hope that it will promote better understanding about the unique cultural establishment here…
    “ kan keh”
    direct translation - ‘fuck chicken’.
actual meaning - referring to someone who’s cynical and selfish, not willing to take even the slightest risk of anything.
eg: “Leh ma ler ! Ah Seng kau giak kan keh ah ..”
[translation: “Your mother ! Ah Seng is damn timid !”]
    “kiong kan ”
direct translation - it actually was a short form for “ki ho lang kan ”, which means, ‘go get yourself fucked by someone’.
actual meaning - an exclamation that was used to vehemently protest against any disagreement or illogical statements.
eg: “Kiong kan lah ! lu sio kong lim peh be hiau si boh ??”
[translation : “Kiong kan lah ! You think you can fool me ??”]
    “bak moy”
    direct translation - ‘pork porridge’
actual meaning - to undergo the complete and permanent cessation of all vital functions; i.e. die
eg: “Eh ! Lu lang cai boh ? Ray Charles bak moy liao !”
[translation : “Eh ! Did you guys know ? That Ray Charles is dead !”]
    “loo siao”
    direct translation - ‘rub sperm’
actual meaning - to riot, to rebel, make trouble or go ballistic. Can be used as adjective, verb or noun.
eg: “That char bor, si peh loo siao, tiam tiam chueh soo …”
[translation : “That woman, damn rebellious, always look for trouble..”]
    “char siao”
    direct translation - ‘fried sperm’
actual meaning - to disturb or to vex someone
eg: “Mai char siao lah !”
    [translation : “Don’t disturb me !”]
    “kuai lan”
    direct translation - ’suave dick’
actual meaning - adjective to describe a very cheeky or obnoxious person.
eg: “That si ginna si peh kuai lan.”
[translation : “That kid is damn obnoxious.”]
    “apong sin”
direct translation - ‘pancake spirit’ (pancake is also the secondary meaning for vagina)
actual meaning - a person who’s fawning over any females and willing to do anything for them.
eg: “Ah Piang kau giak apong sin. Peng eu kio chut, boh eng. Char bor kio chut, eh poey…”
[translation : “Ah Piang damn ‘pancake spirit’. When his friends ask him out, always busy. But when girls ask him out, he’ll literally fly out”]
    “ciu cheng”
    direct translation - ‘hand gun’
actual meaning - an adjective to describe someone that is unskillfully clumsy, delinquent and fucked up.
eg: “Si tua pui, kau giak ciu cheng. Chia pun beh hiau park.”
[translation : “That fat ass damn fucked up. Don’t even know how to park a car”]
“tu lan” (also known as T.L.)
    direct translation - ‘pig’s dick’
real meaning - hatefully dislike or angry; pissed.
eg: “Kua tiok ee eh bin … pun tu lan.”
[translation : “It pissed me off even by just a glance of his face.”]
    “kam lan”
    direct translation - ‘to fellate’
real meaning - an expression added into questions - to denote something ridiculous or defies logical understanding.
eg: “Lu choaa lu eh bor chut lai kam lan aa ??”
[translation : “Why the hell do you bring along your wife ??”]
    “loh tee”
direct translation - ‘bread’ (comes from the malay word “roti”)
real meaning - an adjective to describe a very slutty, chintzy and promiscuous female being. Highly derogatory.
eg: “Ah Piang eh chat loh si peh loh tee. Goh lui chap pek tau”
[translation : “Ah Piang’s girl is a goddamn slut. Five cents for eighteen times”]
Of course there are more. These are just the common ones and is good enough for you to understand more about Penang . It’s a beautiful place.

  11. Glad you are around xiean ,

you are smart to take the bet , this will have a great impact on the elections as people taking the bets will vote for BN to make sure he doesn't win by 15000 votes .

That LGE think like an opposition and sometimes more like a college student than a Chief minister.
Think Kaytee should make this issue into an article just by itself .

Another thing is I hope Arif will use this slogan " Mai hor wa su ane chay , tolong suan hor wa " I think this will help .

Going out for lunch , continue later .

  14. chaptokam, when you used 'si peh' (not just once but a number of times) I am doubtful of your Penang origin, unless of course you are from Carnavan St (Lam Ch'an Nah) or the Beach St/Bricklin Rd areas - wakakaka, but just joking!

Eg. Your "That char bor, si peh loo siao, tiam tiam chueh soo" should be, in sweet Penang Hokkien "That char bor, cheen chnea loo siao, tiam tiam chueh soo"

As for bah moi, see the link I'll be providing Xiean regarding his interpretation of kongsamkok - contrary to his (or her) belief, kongsamkok does NOT refer to politics between US, Russia and China.

It refers to the '3 Kingdoms' period in China where we have the legendary figures of Kuan Kong and the brotherhood of the Peach Gardens.

When we say 'they are kongsamkok' we mean they are engaged in idle discussion, eg. trying to solve the world's problems, or as Xiean mentioned, making political bullshit.

See my link (my other blogsite) http://ktemockongsamkok.blogspot.com/

and particularly for your bah moi (porridge) see http://ktemockongsamkok.blogspot.com/2007/10/secret-soup-4.html

  15. Hello fellow frens,

Nostradamus, nice speculations. But then, do you think Lim Guan Eng will hand over the post of Chief Minister? I don't think so.

DSNTR and DSAI are enemies, they hate each other and they want to reach for the same post, PM. So none of them will compromise in anyway.

UMNO would never join PKR to form a coalition party. But the possibilites of PAS and UMNO to form is there, because of certain factors which I would not want to discuss in this comment.

DAP had been sticking with PKR this whole time because they share the same interest and opinion, unlike the PAS. So could form a new caolition party with the HINDRAF. But then, how far are them going to cooperate with HINDRAF?

It is possible if DSAI is charged and then disqualified as MP after winning the small election in Permatang Pauh. This is a natural thought because The BN's would allow him to make riots in the parliament and prvent him from becoming PM.

There are possibilities of another election coming up in Selangor and Perak. The chances are high in Perak.

It is possible that new religious party will be form, IF racial sentiments tend to terrorize the political agendas onwards.

  16. Lim Guan Eng is miles, miles better as CM than Koh Tsu Koon.

DAP Penang has made mistakes, and still A Lot more needs to be done, a lot more to meet the expectations of the people. But I'm well aware of the big picture.

For years we voted for BN like visiting a dentist, not because we liked it, but we couldn't see a viable choice.

PR is giving a clear choice for the way forward.

  17. Dear dear comrade-in-arms

Hi Chaptokam, xiean, all. Missed you guys.
Took a much needed break. Zappa didn't go on a holiday with me. Did he?
It irks me that the press dubbed Permatang Pauh as mother-of-all elections.
To me, its just Anwar's election.
To be MP and then fight tooth and nail to be PM.
If (a big IF) he wins, still unrest with street protests and demo until he realised his ambition.
If Ariff wins, our life should go on peacefully.
But Anwar will be filing suit after suit of so-called vote rigging.
A sure thing is the BN government will still be intact.
Nothing will happen after Sept 16.
    To Anwar's destination, that is.
So it is really an unnecessary thing.
And I am also stupid to make a fuss on the non-issue.

OK now my brain functioning back

Right now the MCA is under going a metamorphosis . The current MCA leadership are all Chinese ed . The English ed leaders see things differently from the current batch of fool hardy leaders . With the current scenerio and for MCA to reinvent itself to make itself relevant , The MCA will have to proactive because a lot of eyes are actually looking at us from a distance . We need to change our concept of things like I mentioned before like fire prevention rather than we only try to put out the fire when a fire has broken out ! and everybody shouting fire ! fire!

We can only get into the serious business of metamorphosis after our party election and I can predict its gonna be fireworks display !!you'll have never seen before ! No more like in previous years , no more ! This I can gurantee you and the final concept will be for ALL MALAYSIANS !We will fight for all Malaysians irrespective of race .
