A severe blow to Anwar Ibrahim

“You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.”
- Abraham Lincoln

I believe the reason for Aussie PM Kevin Rudd’s refusal to meet with Anwar Ibrahim has nothing to do with 'giving face' to AAB, as Anwar’s daughter had bravely attempted to dismiss it as such, in an interview with Malaysiakini.

Nurul Izzah said rather ungraciously: "... we do understand the intricacies of public diplomacy and that Rudd has to give face to Abdullah but it is unfortunate for all.”

"Nevertheless, come Sept 16, we will gladly accord them the proper decorum and if he wishes to pay a courtesy call to future opposition leader – Abdullah or deputy PM Najib Abdul Razak - we would be more than happy to assist", alluding of course to her father’s boast of seizing majority rule through massive defections of BN MPs to her party, PKR by 16 September 2008.

In fact Malaysiakini reported the Australian PM hails M'sia as 'vibrant democracy', where Rudd declared:

"... democracy is not just alive and well in Malaysia but flourishing."

"What has been great for us all to see in the councils of the world is the strength of Malaysia's democratic processes and the fact that these democratic processes have been tested and applied in recent elections."

I believe Rudd has been briefed by his diplomats here and back at home, where it’s quite difficult to criticise Malaysia after a general election which saw the ruling party lost its two-thirds majority in Parliament, five States to the opposition parties, and several ministers and party leaders now officially jobless.

Even silver-tongue Anwar Ibrahim would have difficulty convincing the world that the Malaysian general election in the main was not fair. In fact, the election results had caught many opposition (but now ruling parties in States) leaders by surprise, who obviously hadn't expected such 'fairness'.

This is not to say that Australian PM or ministers do not meet with opposition leaders of a foreign country because in Australian politics, the opposition is part of her Majesty’s government, known as ‘Her Majesty's loyal opposition’.

In Malaysia, alas, the opposition is always considered as ‘disloyal’ (to whom?) and to be treated as the ‘enemy’, who has been inconveniently allowed into Parliament by some stupid voters. Well, we certainly are a long way from a two-party system.

The first reason I can think of Rudd’s refusal to see Anwar is that the latter has no official status within the Malaysian parliamentary system.

But her* his wife has, as the Opposition leader. I believe Kevin Rudd would be more inclined to meet Dr Azizah in her parliamentary role. But alas (again), no one proposed that, did they?

* a 'bitch' of an error, maybe a Freudian slip ;-), thanks to my blogging mate Susan Loone for spotting it

It must always be Anwar, isn't it ... where he even claimed ‘de facto’ leadership of PKR and in that insensitive assertion, consigned his wife, the party’s de jure president, into an embarrassing subordinate or subservient role.

Secondly, the Australian diplomats don’t suffer from what some Malaysian are experiencing, a blinkered view of the political situation.

These diplomats know that with a 58 seat majority the BN is the legitimate ruling party, which is how western democracies confirm their governments.

They don’t believe in nor support emotional undemocratic bullsh*t like “We can’t wait for another five years”, where those making that impatient demand, apart from insulting the supremacy of the ballot box (hmmm, manalah ‘ketuanan rakyat’?), forget conveniently that ‘waiting for another five years’ is precisely an institutionalised democratic process where voters make their choices through the ballot box. It’s called democracy.

Now, isn't such an undemocratic behaviour typically alike UMNO's, with the same mentality that's unable to comprehend the democratic process, and categorising the return of 140 BN MPs as those "who have been inconveniently allowed into Parliament by some stupid voters"?

"We cannot wait for another 5 years!" F*-frightening lah!

The emotional outburst shows that some so-called political 'reformers'(?) would be prepared to seize power through undemocratic process, not unlike the military in Thailand or Burma. We should be grateful that they aren’t in control of the military.

Thirdly, the Aussies know that Anwar Ibrahim has been attempting to destabilise the new BN government through a continuous propaganda of pending party defections by BN MPs and ‘various’ other means - tomorrow I'll provide my take on this.

Knowing the Aussies and their disgust for party hopping, I am not surprised that the diplomats would have advised Rudd to stay clear of Anwar.

Aussies don’t like party hoppers, as seen in the example of Cheryl Kernot who was punished severely even though she didn’t take her former party seat along with her when she moved across from the Social Democrats to the Labour Party.

Then there was Brendan Nelson, the current Liberal Party leader who is still being castigated today (from time to time) for almost similar tadpole-like behaviour because he switched from Labour to the conservative Liberal Party some 15 years ago on the advice of his AMA (Aus Medical Association) President and good friend, Bruce Shepherd. Mind you, Nelson was a Labour Party member in his teens because his dad Des, a strong union man had enrolled him in Labour.

It’s a wretched blow to Anwar Ibrahim, not so much because a PM of a western country had refused to see him, but more because that PM had seen through him.

You can’t claim to promote reformasi when you keep talking about seizing power through party defections of MPs.

  1. disagree with you KT

Anwar has to encourage defections to go ahead with his reform agenda.

you seriously think there can be reforms with UMNO at the helm ? Can there be a free and fair election with BN at the helm ? postal votes, phantom voters.....u name it.....

criticise if you have a better solution, or else dont complain when BN dishes out F***ING shit to you...

  4. The snub by the Aussie PM clearly reflects their stand for fair election that the loser not try to get MPs to cross over by obvious corrupt means like millions of dollars of course sponsored by CIA like they helped Sadam Hussain and Osama bin Laden to power.

  5. "Anwar has to encourage defections to go ahead with his reform agenda"

I continue to be amazed (or 'flabbergasted' would be more like it) by the oxymoronic beliefs of the anwar-faithful. It's not unlike that infamous American military statement during the Vietnam war, "We had to destroy the village to save it".

The reality is Anwar encourages defections for his personal interests, not reforms.

  7. Hey hey KayTee,

You never seem to give good old Anwar a break don't you? You do all you can to run him down at every opportunity..and rightly or wrongly, you are playing into the hands of Badawi, Najib and all those scums in UMNO who want to kill Anwar off politically now that he is making much headway against them. Anwar may have his faults, but can you tell all of us who can be a better person to topple UMNO than Anwar. Kit Siang? Hadi? Do you want UMNO to continue to rule for the next 50 years? So please do all of us a favour by ceasing your attacks on Anwar ...at least until UMNO bites the dust anyway!

  12. Just to let you know my entire extended family in Tanjung Tualang, about 120 of them now believe Anwar Ibrahim is guilty of sodomy. I am a graduate of UM and working as an analyst with a broking firm and my accountant wife for the last 12 years is a Malay from Johor and her extended family also believe the same.
We just want the country to get back on the right track and not to allow it to be turned into an oligarch where Pak Lah and his family and crony to rule. I am a fourth generations Malaysian and my family live in this country namely Tanjung Tualang since time immemorial we want to keep on doing it and not allow to see it broken in pieces! Terima Kasih!
Najib is fine with us by the way!

  14. that two of the most critical turmoil we've had in our recent political history both concern the same person speaks volume. His ambitions know no bounds, he's willing to trade with the enemy to gain his power. How I wish the current two power player could kill each other off (metaphorically speaking) and leave the country in peace. ppl of malaysia, we did not vote and greenlight this.

Mad Hathir is super worried DSAI becomes PM, all his corruption will be exposed to the surface, DSAI is not like Pak Lah. No chance!!!!

Najis Razak??? The womanising murderer!!! Who is he trying to kid?? Look at his tiko-face!!!!

  16. Aye aye aye. they're probably laughing at him for the apparent contradiction for a "democratic reformer" to publicly cash in on his defection claims, heck they're probably laughing at the Malaysian more for buying it. Wan Azizah is one amazing woman, I will give her that much. For a smart woman to say something like the BN won in the pass general election through manipulation of the EC takes alot of courage.

  17. September 16!!! When? How?
With many unpleasant things happening lately to Anwar, can September 16 be made real?

But Nurul Izzah with so much confidence claimed that they (she, her mother and her father only laa..) could seiz the power come 16 september. I wonder did she forget to take medicine because she sounds more like being in delusion. Or perhaps daddy has taught her the mastery skill of deception.

Well KT, the second last paragraph is something that Anwaristaz has to ponder, and I shall quote

"It’s a wretched blow to Anwar Ibrahim, not so much because a PM of a western country had refused to see him, but more because that PM had seen through him."

    Cheers everyone.

  19. An articulate piece. It's nice to read something intelligent and non-populist that isn't written by fans of PKR, though that was a good comeback by Nurul Izzah :)

  20. Either you want to leave poorer than 2007 or want to build the future to be richer than 2008, that's the question. Leader that has charisma to bring this looks like Anwar > Guan Eng > Razaleigh > Najib > Abdullah > Samy Velu. Or you can suggest your own name to be the leader of this country if you have the guts!

  21. Don't be fooled by KT. He's feeling a little inferior these days .. I mean his blog being surpased by others what.

He therefore needs to be controversial in order to interest and therefore "trafffic" postings to his site.

I think he needs viewership also because he wants to be noticed and perhaps offered a big fat contract by some international PR agency to write some promo stuff for their products. Tsk! Tsk!

BTW what kind of looney name is "KTemoc"?

  24. Kay Tee the Katak,

I wholly concur with your principled condemnation of the evil of party hopping.

It is just so unprincipled and shameless - blatant dishonesty and treachery to the voters.

The very foundational pillar of democracy - the ballot box - is despised.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Maybe Rudd knows Anwar is guilty so why waste time on him and what is Anwar today not even a party or opposition leader - just another citizen who makes noice nothing else. He can call everybody everything but when someone calls him a spy you get a 100million suit.

  27. I have a very different analysis of the events, and it has little or nothing to do with frogs.

You need to place this visit in the context of 25 years of difficult relationships between Canberra and Kuala Lumpur.

The new Australian PM, Kevin Rudd sees an opportunity to reverse a whole generation of prickly relations with KL. No doubt the commercial opportunities play a big consideration. Which explains his yucky, servile, glittering praise of Malaysia's "vibrant democracy".
Democracy - literally "rule by the people" is far, far more than a mathematically accurate elections (even then there is some doubt to that) - and Kevin Rudd and Aussies ought to know that.

He knew any meeting with Anwar would be treated with hostility by the Malaysian government.
So he chose to refuse any meeting with Anwar.

At a practical level, Australia and Malaysia have solid links, but at a political & diplomatic level, the last 3 Australian PMs - Bob Hawke, Paul Keating and John Howard have had rocky, sometimes downright rude exchanges with Malaysian PMs.

Mahathir hated this predominantly White, Anglo-Saxon country. Keating called Mahathir "recalcitrant". Mahathir banned government & GLC purchases from Australia & contract awards to Australian companies.

When Badawi took over, there was a window of opportunity to improve relations, but it was bedevilled by John Howard's unquestioning support of Bush foreign policy, especially in the Middle East.
During Anwar Ibrahim's 6 years in prison, the Australian government officially listed Anwar as a "prisoner of conscience" - a term usually reserved for those detained without trial or acceptable judicial process. A very undiplomatic thing to do, given the Malaysian government considered Anwar had been found guilty through a proper trial - though Malaysians remained unconvinced about the fairness of that trial.

The Malaysian government considered Australia's support for Anwar's release an unwarranted interference in its internal affairs. John Howard did meet with Anwar after his release - with predictable hostile reaction from the Malaysian govt.

Strictly speaking, Anwar has no official status, he's merely a private citizen.
Kevin Rudd could have side-stepped the issue by meeting Wan Azizah, who does have official status as Leader of the Opposition. No idea why he chose not too.

  29. Malaysia wants to delay trade negotiations with Australia until both countries join a regional free-trade agreement, the Australian Financial Review reported July 11.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he wanted to focus on the trade deal between Australia, New Zealand and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the newspaper said.

The bilateral deal with Malaysia was tipped to add A$1.9 billion ($1.83 billion) to the Australian economy, the newspaper said.

Rudd thought by not meeting Anwar he`d get his way. But he failed.

  30. When they needed AAB, he is the Prime Minister.

Mother and daughter when to see AAB and begged for the safety of Anwar when he was hiding in the Turkisk Embassy. They told the people that the PM give his assurance of Anwar safety.

Now when they do not needed anymore, they want to destroy AAB with the no confidence vote against him.

What the heck, if they do not have the confidence of AAB as the PM, in the first place they should not went to see him and beg for Anwar safety?

    Another desperate attempt.

  31. Anwar suffered another BIG BLOW when TG Haji Hadi made a statement that PAS supporters are not stupid to be pawns of PAKATAN.
Though PAS had a better machinery during last election, PAS contribution is almost forgotten as the agenda now is to seize power to fulfill the personal interest of Anwar the Mat King Leather.

  32. lets leave the sodomy aside and ponder this "since when does the sexual preference of a politician become a national debate?". If you think that Anwar is not worthy as a leader due to his anal practice then that racist Najib and all UMNO youth grads should be excluded from government post. The West did the same thing to a late German Chancellor during WWII. So much so, all of us today believe Hitler was an evil person. Ponder this, if Hitler was truly as evil as we were told (if Anwar was corrupted as the BN sponsored papers lead you to believe) would the Germanic people have follow his lead? So called democracy does not exist. True democracy equals anarchy. CNN, CIA, UMNO, these are all machines for the selected few to rule over us the people. I say let Anwar have his show, then he will reveal his true color. The Tenku gang and his offsprins/associated has been given theirs, its someone else turn. Yes, even the PAS fanatic shall have their chance. If you truly believe in so called democracy
