Virginity in Tamilnadu Vital to Tamil-hood

Journalist Swati Das of the Times of India advised readers not to speak the truth in Chennai – Madras for pro Brit people.

What does he mean? Well, the story started with what Indian movie star Khushboo had said. She is now in deep shitttttttt.

She was detained but just allowed bail with an admonition from the judge for her to shutup. Even movies starring her have been banned or had her part clipped off.

Khushboo had said casually that men should no longer expect their brides to be virgins (what's that?). Then she gave good advice to youngsters to use protection when indulging in premarital sex, because of the danger of contacting AIDS.

This was what Das said of her remarks:

“Anywhere else, Khushboo would have been called an anti-AIDS spokesperson and perhaps even feted, but not Tamil Nadu with its insular politics and blinkered politicians.”
“It was almost as if the state was being guided by some Taliban-type morality inspectors. Police have in recent weeks closed a star hotel after local papers published pictures of a private party where couples were seen kissing, and hauled up other couples just walking in parks."
"Over a year ago, a few women poets were lambasted by their male colleagues for writing about women's sexuality. One said these women should be slapped!”

Suddenly Khushboo found that there were 25 defamation cases against her for suggesting to men not to expect their brides to be virgins. Das lamented that as ‘cultural ayatollahs’, courts and police hounded Khushboo, there were very few people in Tamil Nadu who was ready to defend her and her freedom of speech.

However another actress, Suhasini did, apologising to Khushboo on behalf of the Tamil people, but subsequently found she was subjected to the same harrassment by Tamilnadu's cultural ayatollahs'. The pressure was so punishing that she was forced to withdraw her support for Kushboo and instead apologise to Chennai's film industry.

Das pointed out that the Congress Party lacks balls as well (actually he put it in a less colourful manner). He noted that Jayanti Natarajan, a party leader, merely said that people have a right to express their views but Khushboo shouldn’t have hurt a section of people [this having-it-two-ways reminds me of PAS stand with regards to the slaying of Dr Azahari].

Das condemned the Indian media (apart from The Times of India) for remaining largely mute during the controversy instead of providing balanced information.

Das said two political parties, Patali Makkal Katchi (PMK) and Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) have equated chastity (meaning virgin brides and no premarital sex) to Tamil-hood. Hence these Tamil Talibans went for the jugulars of liberal-minded people like Khushboo and Suhasini.

Yes, it happened in India, the world's largest democracy.

  2. Thanks Isac, both for the advice and link. But I note poor Kushboo still continues to be in dire straits. I wonder what sort of charges she has faced that required her to be apprended (or surrendered herself to the courts) and then released only on bail? That has made her an accused criminal!

    Hasn't that been Taliban-ish?

  5. Thanks Vinayak,

My concerns have not been so much about whether there are pre-marital nookies in India, but more about Kushboo's right to say things that do not incite unlawfulness, hatred or violence.

The judicial threat on her utterance has been a black mark on Inida's democracy and freedom of speech.

Unfortunately we live in today's world where itronically there's increasing intolerance for another's views or rights. We need to eb vigilant and speak up when necessary.

  6. So KTemoc in effect ...

    - There is pre marital sex

    - there is NO freedom of speech

Adding the two together you could easily conclude that there is LOT MORE PRE MARITAL SEX than what is accepted.. because other smaller / less famous women would just keep quite when they come to know of pre marital or extra marital sex

Good god !! One can draw the conclusions..

However our political and legal fraternity still believes that women are from the 18th centuries and are each a walking talking savitri !!

    hmm...

  7. While marriage is, relatively speaking, a new institution, mainly for possession of "property" (you decide who owns whom?), sex has existed as long as the gods. So pre-marital sex must undoubtedly exist - didn't Lord Krishna himself had pre-marital nookies with Radha?

  8. Lord Krishna had nookies with Radha? Hmm..I'm not sure about this...Was it written in the scriptures... I don't think so.....

Unless you're postulating than ofcourse you're free to do that.....but I doubt he did it..definitely after marriage as he is a god. But then again in the heavens and in higher plains....sex is not as primal as what we do now....hehehe...don't ask me how I know...it's from a book that I read....enough to say that the sex in heaven is far far far far far more subtle than what it is on earth. and sex in the heavens have a completely different meaning.

Interesting topic though. Kushboo is now being skewered...but I prefer Aiswarya Rai in bikini any time than Kushboo.

  10. Radna was one of the gopis that Krishna frolicked with before he married - his favourite. See the following (my bold-ing):

    Gopika vadana chandra Chakora,
    Nithya nirguna niranjana jishno,
    Poorna roopa jaya sankara soure,
    Sree pathe samaya dukka masesham.

The God who is the bird that drinks the beauty of all Gopis,
    Who is forever permanent,
    Who is without any properties,
    Who is pure truth,
    Who is forever victorious,
    Who is the full-bodied form,
Who is the Sankara born in the dynasty of the sun,
And who is the lord of Goddess Lakshmi,
Be pleased to destroy all my sorrows
