Thaksin ups the Ante in South Thailand

A former Thai prime minister Anand Panyarachun, recruited to offer suggestions to solve the crisis in Thailand's south, would like to see the Thai government apologise for the brutalities perpetrated on Muslims last year. Some others would also like to see those military officers responsible charged for various crimes.

But Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra isn’t the sort of person who would apologise. He is known to be arrogant and ruthless in his own confidence to solve issues, be those political, economic or military.

Instead, he has upped the ante and will extend the unsavoury emergency rule in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala where Muslim Thais predominate.

One small concession to fair play, he has appointed a Thai Muslim as the Commanding Officer for the southern operations. But Thaksin has vowed that one way or other he is determined to pacify the south.
