It’s believed that more than 10,000 people died from the effect of Hurricane Katrina, more than 3 times the toll of the 9/11 attacks. But thousands of survivors continue to suffer from deprivation, hunger, thirst, and threats from criminal elements. All these are set against a background of sheer devastation, blazing buildings and uncollected rotting corpses.
The gravity of the catastrophe has increased criticism of President Bush and his handling of the crisis. However, aid and food supplies are gradually trickling in even as President Bush admitted that the rescue effort is not satisfactory.
