In the Whangarei area in New Zealand’s North Island, wood pigeons have been getting drunk on wild berries. Because the winter has been harsh, killing off the birds’ normal food supply, these pigeons have been forced to eat guava berries, which would ferment and give birdies more than an 0.05 alcohol reading.
The local people have rescued some 26 rather tipsy pigeons last month. Just as well they aren’t yamseng-ing and getting mabok (drunk) in Malaysia, because many Malaysians love the drunken chicken dish, which are just a quick pair of chopsticks away from drunken pigeons.
Goes well with Guiness Stout. Yamseng!
