PETALING JAYA:
MCA has been allocated one more seat to contest in the Nov 14 Melaka state election, with Barisan Nasional to vie for 22 seats in total instead of 21 as announced previously.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong said the party will also contest the Chinese-majority seat of Bandar Hilir following the latest round of discussions between BN and Perikatan Nasional, which have formed an alliance for the Melaka polls.

He said the party will field Jasmine Lok, 38, a Melaka city councillor, to vie for the DAP stronghold.

“At 4pm, BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi handed the candidate her letter of appointment (surat watikah),” Wee said at a press conference in Parliament.

Wee said this meant PN will only contest six seats in the state election.

“PN’s top leadership has stated their readiness to let MCA contest, because this is a seat that we have always contested.

“MCA is familiar to voters in the area, and we have a local councillor serving there. Also, Bandar Hilir falls under the Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency, which is also another traditional seat of MCA’s,” he said.

This will be Lok’s first time running for election. She is also the Melaka MCA information chief and has served as a Melaka city local councillor since 2022.

Chinese voters make up about 73% of the electorate in the Bandar Hilir constituency, established in 1974. DAP won the seat first, before MCA held it from 1982 to 1995.

Since then, DAP has kept a firm grip on Bandar Hilir, winning with a 7,778-vote majority in the 2021 polls.

Last week, Wee led an MCA walkout as BN unveiled its candidates for the state polls, saying the Chinese-based component was not consulted about the seat allocation.

After discussions with Zahid and other BN leaders yesterday, Wee later said MCA agreed to contest just the two seats.
