KUALA LUMPUR — Former Setiawangsa MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad has confirmed that he has formally exited the Dewan Rakyat and is no longer required to attend parliamentary sittings, after his resignation letter submitted to the Speaker on May 18 was acknowledged.

Nik Nazmi said the notice, addressed to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, followed his departure from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and subsequent move to Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama).

Speaking to Scoop, he said Parliament had duly taken note of his resignation, effectively ending his role in the lower House.

“On May 18, I submitted my official resignation letter to the Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat and that matter has been duly noted. Accordingly, I no longer have any need to attend the sittings of the Dewan Rakyat as a MP,” he said.

He added that vacating the Setiawangsa seat was consistent with his political realignment, describing it as a matter of principle following his exit from PKR and entry into Bersama on May 19.

“My decision to resign as the MP for Setiawangsa was made out of respect for the mandate of the people who entrusted me with their confidence in the 15th General Election under the PKR banner.

“After making the decision to join Bersama, I felt it was appropriate to return that mandate to the people so that they may determine the direction of leadership they desire,” he said.

Despite stepping away from Parliament, Nik Nazmi said he would continue serving constituents in Setiawangsa, stressing that his engagement and service machinery remained active.

“Although I no longer hold the position as a MP, my commitment to the residents of Setiawangsa has never changed. I continue to go down to the ground to engage with residents, listen to their problems, and seek the best solutions.

“My office also remains operational as usual to receive complaints and to ensure that assistance and services to the community continue without any disruption,” he said.

He added that he had conducted engagement sessions with residents to explain his decision, and reiterated his intention to contest the seat again in the next general election under Bersama.

“To ensure that the people understand the reason behind the decision I have made, I have held two engagement and dialogue sessions with the residents of Setiawangsa.

“Through these sessions, I explained the factors behind the move while also emphasising my commitment to continue serving and to offer myself to contest again in the Setiawangsa constituency in the next general election,” he said.

Nik Nazmi said the decision to vacate the seat was not taken lightly, but maintained it was guided by principle and the belief that voters should be given the opportunity to decide on their representative following his change in political affiliation.

In a related development, the Pandan parliamentary seat held by former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has also been vacated, leaving both constituencies without representation as the Dewan Rakyat convenes on Monday. – June 21, 2026
