KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal beating of a pet dog in Taman Orkid, Ipoh, after a video of the incident went viral online.
The 91-second video, posted by the Malaysian Animal Organization on Instagram, captured a man beating a dog to death with an iron rod. A police report on the incident was subsequently filed on Sept 19 at the Menglembu Police Station.
The case is being investigated under two laws: Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for animal cruelty, and Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation, which police said relates to threats made between family members.
“The suspect has been arrested in relation to the incident and is currently out on police bail pending the completion of investigations,” Ipoh District Police Chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad said in a statement.
He also advised the public not to share the video further to avoid causing public anxiety, and affirmed that police take animal cruelty cases seriously and will cooperate with relevant agencies.
The public is encouraged to report any information regarding animal abuse directly to the police or the Department of Veterinary Services for appropriate action.
