Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said there would be zero tolerance against bullying at all Mara institutions.

PETALING JAYA
Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has warned bullies that they will be shown the door following another bullying incident at a public higher education institution.

In the latest incident, a cadet at Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) in Sungai Besi was allegedly bullied by a senior who pressed a hot iron against his chest.

The armed forces said the incident is being investigated.

This is the second serious bullying incident at UPNM following the death of navy cadet Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain who was tortured by his peers at UPNM’s Jebat hostel in 2017.

The Court of Appeal had imposed the death sentence on six former UPNM students convicted of murdering him.

“There were no lessons learned from past cases that ended in tragedy,” said Asyraf in a Facebook post.

“There will be zero tolerance if this happens at any Mara institution, including Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM).

“My principle is clear: ‘You touch, you go! If you bully, you’re out!”

He said bullies need not bother appealing to Mara institutions for sympathy or to be reconsidered for admission again as students had repeatedly been warned not to engage in bullying.

There have been various reports of bullying at MRSMs.

In July, Asyraf said that any form of bullying, whether physical or mental, would not be tolerated as it was a crime.

Last November, he urged parents of any MRSM student who was a victim of bullying to inform Mara directly if the school administration tried to cover up such cases.

His comments came in the wake of an alleged bullying incident at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK), in which it was reported that the mother of a Form 4 student had demanded the expulsion of a group of seniors who allegedly assaulted her son.

The mother said that although her son suffered a groin injury during the assault, the bullies were only punished with three strokes of the cane and ordered to perform community service.

She attacked the school for not enforcing its “you touch, you go” policy, which stated that bullies would be expelled.
