Liu praises 'coward' Akmal for 'moving on' from making racist remarks

Former DAP assemblyperson Ronnie Liu has praised Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh who appeared to have “moved on” from making racially charged statements.
Specifically, Liu (above) referred to Akmal’s call on the government to form a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the National Farmers’ Organisation (Nafas) scandal and Khazanah Nasional Berhad’s loss-making investments in local brand Fashion Valet.
“I think he (Akmal) dares not meet me. He knows he has nothing to win and everything to lose.
“Maybe now he has moved on and so I want to praise him on the RCI call. It is good that he is no longer creating unnecessary problems,” Liu told Malaysiakini today.
“That is the right thing to do as a rising politician. Focus on the important issues, instead of making calls to boycott this and that,” he added.
Akmal became both famous and infamous in different circles at the height of the KK Mart socks controversy when he urged for a boycott of the chain convenience store.
Since then, the doctor-turned-politician has been at the forefront of issues related to race and religion.
Mission to tone down Akmal
Last month, Liu revealed his mission to stop Akmal from making racial statements and that he had contacted Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to fix a meeting with the Merlimau assemblyperson.

Liu made the request after Akmal responded in outrage to a controversy during a parade in Teluk Intan, where the organiser - Guan Gong Cultural Association - eventually apologised for Chinese nationals waving their country’s flags at the event.
‘Unusually quiet’
Liu, who is also the association’s adviser, said today that neither Zahid nor Akmal had responded to his meeting request.
“He (Akmal) is unusually quiet,” said the former Sungai Pelek assemblyperson, who noted that Akmal in the past was quick to respond and attack DAP leaders including Teresa Kok and Nga Kor Ming.
“He (Zahid) is waiting for Akmal to respond. He cannot force him to meet me, right?” Liu added.

In a Facebook post last night, Liu branded Akmal a “coward” and claimed that some of his antics appeared to be worse than that of “certain PAS leaders”.
“Five days have passed since I requested to meet him via his party president so I can tell him face-to-face the importance of racial harmony and good Malaysia-China ties.
“But up to this second, he has ignored me. What a coward,” he said.
