PETALING JAYA
MCA president Wee Ka Siong said tonight he was caught by surprise when deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi announced his appointment as an investment adviser for Chinese nationals and corporations in Malaysia.

Zahid, who is Barisan Nasional chairman, had not mentioned anything prior to making the announcement at MCA’s general assembly last week, Wee said.

“I was stunned when he announced it because he never informed me about it. I could only respond with a laugh when that happened (on stage),” Wee said in a Facebook video.

Brushing off claims that he had accepted the post, Wee said such a position did not exist in the Prime Minister’s Department. He said he knew the available posts “inside out”.

“This position (an investment adviser) wasn’t announced in the 2025 budget. Therefore, there will be no appointment letter for this post. So the question of whether I have accepted the position or not, does not make sense at all,” he said.

Wee’s clarification came after former vice-president Ti Lian Ker was quoted in an FMT report as expressing concern over the appointment, saying it may affect the party’s image adversely.

Ti said the party’s leaders and grassroots believed that Wee should reject the post as being beneath him and unbefitting of the stature of a party president.

Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, acknowledged that the announcement of the appointment had caused discontent among his party leaders.

“I want to reiterate that I will, as the party president, continue to utilise my personal and the party’s connection with China’s government to develop the relationship and collaboration between the two countries. Move on (from this),” he said.

Wee added that Zahid had previously made a similar spontaneous “appointment” in September, when both of them were in Shanghai on an official visit.

He said Zahid announced that Wee was his “adviser”, which he said caught him by surprise.

When approached by China’s media about the appointment, Wee said he was content with his position as MCA president.
