PKR to fast-track party
polls, says Anwar
The party president says it is unnecessary to postpone party elections since GE16 is still some time away.
Bernama reported him as saying this decision was reached at the party’s political bureau meeting yesterday.
Speaking at the opening of the Perak PKR convention in Ipoh today, he said fast-tracking elections would foster collaboration between the younger generation and experienced leaders, giving them more time to effectively manage the party together.
Anwar said it was unnecessary to postpone the polls since the anticipated date for the 16th general election was still some time away.
“There is a need to nurture a new generation (of leaders) among youth and women. They must be afforded more opportunities, including at the branch level.
“Therefore, we should consider expediting the party elections, but not in the chaotic manner of the past,” he said, adding that the party is currently reviewing the election mechanism.
Prior to this, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said the central leadership council meeting discussed the possibility of delaying party elections until after GE16.
However, she later clarified that no final decision was reached during the discussions.
Meanwhile, Anwar said it was decided at yesterday’s political bureau meeting that the cooperation between unity government components should be further strengthened, particularly in Peninsular Malaysia.
