JAKIM needs to clarify on whether it’s halal to spit over prepared food served by Muslim eateries

Focus Malaysia:

JAKIM needs to clarify on whether it’s halal to spit over prepared food served by Muslim eateries

Letter to editor

A FEW days back, a nasi kandar establishment with two branches in Kuala Lumpur was fined following a viral video of its worker allegedly spitting while packing a customer’s food.

Following this, the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) officers inspected the restaurant and charged it with a number of offences ranging from workers not covering their heads and not wearing aprons to not having had typhoid vaccinations.

The eatery’s branch in Publika, Kuala Lumpur was eventually slapped with multiple fines. The incident has brought into sharp focus this practice of spitting over the food in Muslim restaurants.

This practice must be widespread if not why should the worker spit on the food. It is both unhygienic and revolting to see Muslim restaurants do this as a practice as if this is part of food preparing tradition.

One can see a lot of videos from various parts of the world where cooks and waiters spit over the prepared food. Even though it may be disgusting to some, there are many who accept such practice as part of the tradition in some countries.

Need your valuable inputs, @zoo_bear. Can you please verify & fact check this video clip for our viewers?! Is that man actually spitting in the food that is ready to be served?? Why?? And please don't ignore my request like you did the last time. Thanks in advance!! :))

I have seen on videos imam, uztaz and religious figures in India lightly spitting over the food as a form of blessing before it is served to guests at Muslims weddings and receptions.

This practice may be regarded as acceptable when all the cooks and guests are Muslims. This could have been a customary practice for them.

This is the reason why I suppose foreign workers spat on the food before serving or packing the food. Nevertheless, it is not known whether the customer in this case is a Muslim or otherwise or if they he/she consents to such practice.

JAKIM (the Malaysian Islamic Development Department) and other Islamic authorities need to clear the prevalent uncertainty about this issue as soon as possible as Malaysia is a diverse country.

In fact, more light should be thrown on this spitting issue; the authorities should not remain silent and ambiguous on this important issue that affects businesses and consumers.

As it is, there are already a lot of food poisoning cases in Malaysia with people concerned about the spread of infectious and communicable diseases.

Presently, many complaints are being made about restaurants having scarce regard for cleanliness, hygiene and sanitation. The cleanliness of the kitchen leaves a lot to be desired.

A lot of these complaints have gone viral to alert both customers and the authorities. Food poisoning cases are on the rise. The authorities nationwide need to crack the whip and act sternly with heavy fines and closure of the eateries.

In fact, both the health and local authorities need to be strict with foreigners as well as locals opening new eateries by insisting that they follow proper guidelines and municipal by-laws. Strict action should be taken against both employers and employees to drive home the point. – Oct 28, 2024
