KUALA LUMPUR
The country is falling behind on its target to install 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations by 2025, a government backbencher claimed and urged the government to act swiftly on the matter.

Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) said as of March, only 2,288 charging stations had been installed.

“With less than three months to go before 2025, the government must move quickly to avoid missing its target,” she said, referring to one of the objectives in the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).

Yeo said this when debating the Supply Bill 2025 in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The former energy, technology, science, climate change and environment minister went on to suggest including charging stations as assets under the national grid network.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd, the national utility company, should fund the installation of these charging stations under its capital expenditure, she said.

Yeo said there was a need to overcome a “chicken and egg situation”.

“If there are insufficient charging stations, the people won’t buy EVs, but at the same time if there are not enough EVs on the road, companies would not install these charging stations.”

Separately, Yeo urged Putrajaya to include wetlands – which made up 3% of the country’s land area – in its assessments when measuring carbon sinks to provide a more accurate picture.

She also proposed incentives for nature-based carbon credit projects, such as reforestation and mangrove restoration.

Yeo said these projects could generate income and support carbon sink restoration efforts through platforms like the Bursa Carbon Exchange.
