Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has apologised to Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah for his comments during the Selangor state election campaign in Selayang on July 11 last year.

Sanusi expressed genuine regret for the negative implications of his words and said he acknowledged that his comments had caused displeasure and hurt the feelings of the state ruler.

"I humbly wish to convey to His Highness that there was no intention in my heart to mock His Highness, whom I truly respect and hold in high regard.

"Therefore, with full humility and regret, I seek the forgiveness of His Highness, the sultan of Selangor, the Selangor menteri besar, and the people of Selangor for my indecency," he said when reading out the apology at a press conference after the Kedah exco meeting at Wisma Darul Aman in Alor Setar today.

In his original speech last year, Sanusi made comparisons between Kedah and Selangor's royal households.

At one point, Sanusi claimed that the Kedah ruler would not have chosen Amirudin Shari as menteri besar.

This triggered dozens of police reports against Sanusi for allegedly insulting the royal institution.

One such report was filed by the Selangor Royal Council, which serves as the Selangor ruler's advisory body.

Following the reports, Sanusi was slapped with two charges under the Sedition Act for allegedly uttering seditious words regarding the appointment of the Selangor menteri besar and the establishment of the unity government.

He allegedly made the remarks at a political talk at Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara-Kampung Bendahara, Gombak at 11pm on July 11, 2023.
