BEIJING, June 18 — Malaysia will soon start formal proceedings to join Brics, Prime Datuk Seri Minister Anwar Ibrahim said yesterday.

“We have already explained our policy and made our decision. We will start formal proceedings soon,” Sputniknews reported Anwar said in an interview with the founder of Chinese news outlet Guancha, Li Shimo, when asked about when Malaysia was planning to join.

Brics was established in 2009 as a cooperation platform for the largest emerging economies, initially uniting Brazil, Russia, India and China.

South Africa joined the group in 2010. Russia assumed the bloc’s rotating presidency on January 1.

  4. This is just Anwar Madani sucking up to Xi Jinping and China.
It not only contributes nothing to Malaysia's international competitiveness...and likely to be a negative against any new Western Investments in Malaysia.

"contributes nothing to Malaysia's international competitiveness..."

What happened to all those trades within the members of the BRIC?

Despite mostly lower growth forecasts in 2024 compared to 2023, BRICS nations still have a significantly higher average growth forecast at 3.6% compared to the G7 average of 1%.

U know mfering cross-broder trades with yr heirloom inheritance!

    5. Wakakaka...my organisation was and remains highly competitive, efficient, innovative and profitable.
We paid millions in income tax to the Malaysian Government this year.
No thanks to the Malaysian Government's waste, including the Madani government and its support for Hamas terrorists.

I am told there is already some quiet US sanctions imposed on Malaysian companies , with companies unable to place orders for some categories of components, because shipments to Malaysia are now being barred.

    6. Paying millions of tax, remains highly competitive, efficient, innovative and profitable, based ON what?

Russia names main condition for BRICS membership

Countries seeking to join the group must not be involved in unilateral sanctions schemes, Russia’s deputy foreign minister has said

“For us, one of the key criteria for admission to BRICS and welcoming partner states is non-participation…in the illegal sanctions policies, illegal restrictive measures against any BRICS participant, first of all, of course, against Russia,” Ryabkov stated.

This stance is met with “full understanding” by other BRICS members, Ryabkov noted. Moscow expects such a position to maintain its “core nature” as the group grows in the future, he said.

“The fact that BRICS will grow and find new forms both with partners and in terms of its own expansion is indisputable,” the diplomat said, adding that the current ten members of the group have already “adjusted” to each other and are now working “as a team.”

BRICS was founded in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India and China, while South Africa joined in 2011. The group expanded this year by welcoming Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as full-fledged members. The group, now colloquially known as BRICS+, has opted to keep its original name despite the expansion.

Numerous other countries have officially declared an intention to join the organization as well. The latest expression of intent came over the weekend from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who pledged to file the necessary paperwork shortly.

“We have made our policy clear and we have made our decision. We will start the formal process soon. We are waiting for the final result and the feedback from the South African government,” Ibrahim stated.
