Selangor Umno denies Tengku Zafrul's 'wild allegations'

Selangor Umno has denied the “wild allegations” made by Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz when announcing his resignation as the Selangor Umno treasurer yesterday.

According to state Umno information chief Mohd Zaidi Md Zain, the allegations made by the investment, trade, and industry minister against the party’s Selangor chapter are untrue.

“I’m shocked by Tengku Zafrul’s resignation announced via social media.

“He should have at least discussed (about quitting) or written an official letter to Selangor Umno chief (Megat Zulkarnain Omardin) before talking about his grievances.

“Any internal problem concerning Selangor Umno can be settled via discussions and negotiations,” Mohd Zaidi said in a statement today.

Zafrul (above) announced his quitting as Selangor Umno treasurer yesterday, claiming the state chapter had gone astray from the aspirations of the party’s central leadership.

He alleged that the state Umno chapter’s implementation of the party’s revival was “insipid”.

He also said he would maintain his post as Kota Raja Umno division chief and as an appointed supreme council member.

No internal crisis

Elaborating, Mohd Zaidi said it was improper of Zafrul to make baseless allegations without getting complete information from the Selangor Umno leadership.

In fact, claims that the state chapter had deviated from the Umnno central leadership’s aspirations are not true, he added.

“This is because Megat Zulkarnanin is also the political secretary to the deputy prime minister-cum Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi).

“Thus, of course, all his (Megat Zulkarnain’s) acts and decisions would be in line with the party president’s stance.

“All is well with Selangor Umno and there is no internal crisis. Megat Zulkarnanin commands solid support from all division and branch chiefs,” said Mohd Zaidi.

According to him further, Zafrul rarely attended Selangor Umno meetings, which would have given him room to voice out on issues, or question decisions made by the state chapter.

“The least he could have done is discuss with Megat Zulkarnain as they often met at other functions.

“We must investigate this matter (Zafrul’s resignation) as he could be influenced or incited by a third party,” said Mohd Zaidi.

Zafrul was appointed as Selangor Umno treasurer in April 2023.
