KUALA LUMPUR – Days after advocating for the cancellation of the Coldplay concert, PAS is now calling for the Miss World Noble Queen International 2023 programme to be called off.

In a statement today, the party’s ulama wing (DUPP) chief, Datuk Ahmad Yahaya, expressed the view that such a program, particularly when supported by Tourism Malaysia, should not be permitted in the country.

He said that the pageant not only projects a negative image of the country but is also ill-timed, given the ongoing conflict in Gaza that has resulted in the loss of thousands of Palestinian lives.

“We also agreed with several muftis’ view that any entertainment programme that would lull the public, including Coldplay concerts, should not be allowed in this country.

“Are we still oblivious, in not learning from past disasters that once befell the country, as a warning from Allah SWT?

“Therefore, we urge the government to immediately cancel the beauty pageant. The government should also issue a circular to ensure that no more of such programmes can be allowed in this country,” the statement read.

The beauty pageant, which is the 6th edition of Miss World Noble Queen 2023, is set to take place on December 12 at Berjaya Times Square Hotel, here.

The pageant, with the theme ‘Environmental Protection’, aims to celebrate both inner and physical beauty, talent, and intelligence while also promoting Malaysia’s rich diversity in culture and landscape.

The pageant received the participation of 25 delegates from over 20 countries, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Switzerland and Japan.

Yesterday, Muhammad Ismi Mat Taib (Parit–PN) openly opposed the pageant, during his speech in the Dewan Rakyat, where he emphasised having such an event is inappropriate as the majority of the citizens in this country are Muslim, and that Islam is the official religion of the Federation.

On November 21, the founder of the pageant, Jan Sit, filed a police report in response to a protest raised by a social media user who labelled the event as a beauty pageant for transvestites.

Jan staunchly defended the programme, clarifying that it is not intended as a beauty pageant for transvestites.

She underscored the legitimacy of the event, citing Tourism Malaysia’s endorsement as evidence that the program does not promote immorality. – November 24, 2023
