The members from 17 branches in Sepang DAP say they want a local leader who can provide the best service to meet the voters’ needs.

PETALING JAYA: Several DAP branches in Sepang held a gathering to protest against the prospect of an “outsider” being nominated for the Sungai Pelek seat in the Selangor state election, a party source said.

The grassroots from the 17 DAP branches were said to be upset over rumours the party was going to field former Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San in Sungai Pelek.

According to the party source, the protest took place at a basketball court in Kampung Baru Sepang to express the grassroots’ demand for a local candidate to replace the previous assemblyman, Ronnie Liu.

“On Thursday, we (Sepang DAP) had a meeting together with the youth and women’s wings, and we agreed to only support a local candidate in Sungai Pelek.

“We want a local leader who can provide the best service according to the voters’ needs and wants,” the source said.

The source said the grassroots and voters in Sungai Pelek had been disappointed with Liu as they felt neglected by him during his tenure as their assemblyman.

Liu, who left the party two days before the dissolution of the state assembly last month, is a one-term Sungai Pelek assemblyman.

In the 2018 general election (GE14), Liu won the seat on a Pakatan Harapan ticket with a 6,586-vote majority.

State elections are scheduled to be held on Aug 12 in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Terengganu, Kedah, and Kelantan.

The insider said other than Lau, another potential candidate is Liu’s former political secretary, Azfar Faruqi, who is a resident in Sepang.

Contacted by FMT, Azfar said he will leave it to the party’s top leadership to decide which candidate will defend Sungai Pelek at the polls.

“Whatever the decision, I’m ready to help DAP defend the seat in any capacity,” he said.

The party is set to announce its candidates for the state election on Monday.

It was previously reported that Perikatan Nasional will field Sepang Bersatu chief Suhaimi Ghazali as its candidate in Sungai Pelek.
