State polls to be held in August, Anwar suggests

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has proposed for the six state elections to be held in August.

“I am asking our friends for their support in this state as the election will take place here in August.

“There will be an election by August at the latest,” he said in an event in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan last night, as reported by the New Straits Times.

The Kelantan and Selangor state assembly were dissolved on Thursday and Friday respectively to pave the way for the state elections.

Four other states - Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, and Terengganu - are expected to announce the dissolution of their state assemblies soon.

The Election Commission is required to set a polling date within 60 days of the dissolution of the state assemblies.

Meanwhile, in the event last night, Anwar urged voters in Negeri Sembilan to continue placing their trust in the current administration along with their new federal-level partners, BN.

“In Negeri Sembilan, we have a multitude of races. There are Malays, Indians, and Chinese. If someone were to come to the state thinking of campaigning only for Indians or Malays, they would be mistaken.

“We have to preserve this country for all races. (DAP secretary-general) Anthony Loke said there are those who are waiting for the chance (to take over the state government). I say let them wait.

“If we want to save this state, care for it and all its people, then you must look after Pakatan Harapan and the unity government,” the prime minister said.

The new partnership between Harapan and BN is expected to go toe-to-toe with their opposition Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming six state polls.
