Many Muslim households faced wrong direction when praying

KUALA LUMPUR — April 24, 2023: The Selangor Astronomers Association (PAFNS) claims to have found that about 40 per cent of 5,000 households it surveyed were off-course on the location of the qibla or kiblat due to various reasons, including errors in reading the compass.

It goes on to say that some readings were nearly 180 degrees off from the correct point.

The kiblat is the direction of the Kaabah to which Muslims turn to when praying.

PAFNS said only 5,000 were discovered to have the kiblat direction indicated by the owner and 2,000 were incorrect, according to a report in Berita Harian.

Another 15,000 of those surveyed still did not have kiblat direction indicated because the residences or buildings were new.

Once I wrote to a couple of news portals to complain about the directional-navigational cluelessness of their respective reporters. Those reporters would write, say, about a politician pledging to make dramatic-radical changes so much so the new changes would be opposite to where they had been going - correctly if using the phrase "make 180 degrees changes" - instead those reporters would penned "make the alterations 360 degrees around".

Now, just what direction in relation to the old one before-changes-occurred would "360 degrees" bring about? Wakakaka - for the non-navigator among us, if you were heading North, a "360 degrees' change in direction brings you nicely back to North, AGAIN, so what change had occurred?

Strangely, it was not just reporters from one media outlet who were navigationally challenged but many others, wakakaka. I advised the editors not to let those reporters drive their cars unless they have GPS or were only on the main highways, wakakaka.

Thus, it's not surprising that many Muslims failed to realise they were not facing the qibla or kiblat (Mecca) when praying.

As a rough rule of thumb, Mecca is NW of Malaysia, about 315 deg True - don't worry about Magnetic North as the magnetic declination (variation) is negligible and may be ignored.

The actual direction of the qibla or kiblat (Mecca) from KL is 292.54 deg True, not too far from my rough rule-of-thumb 315 deg True (certainly far far better than some poor devotees who were said to be facing 112 deg True, effectively the opposite direction).
