Khaled Nordin to defend Umno veep post

Kota Tinggi MP Khaled Nordin is one of three vice-presidents in Umno.

PETALING JAYA: Kota Tinggi MP Khaled Nordin has confirmed that he will defend his Umno vice-president’s post at the upcoming party elections on March 18.

According to Bernama, the higher education minister confirmed this to reporters on the sidelines of an event in Kuala Lumpur.

The other two incumbent Umno vice-presidents are former prime minister and Bera MP Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Mahdzir Khalid. Mahdzir failed to defend his Padang Terap seat in the recent general election (GE15).

Ismail had spoken out against some of Umno’s recent decisions, including the sackings and suspensions of several leaders as well as the approval of the no-contest motion for the top two party posts at the recent general assembly.

He had said the sackings and suspensions of leaders like Khairy Jamaluddin and Hishammuddin Hussein were not in compliance with the legal process and contradicted the principle of “natural justice”.

Earlier today, Terengganu Umno member Aizat Fikri Nasir said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) was investigating a possible violation of Umno’s constitution after the party pushed through the no-contest motion without due notice.

Umno was reported to have been split over whether the top two posts should be contested, with some saying it risked dividing the party, and others arguing party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, must prove they had the support of the grassroots.

Meanwhile, Johor Umno Youth chief Hairi Mad Shah says he will contest the Umno Youth vice-chief post. The Larkin assemblyman said he has obtained the blessing of his division and state leaders, as well as current Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.
