KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been questioned by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the alleged award of a government project to someone in his family when he was prime minister.

The Pagoh MP who served as Malaysia’s eighth prime minister from March 2020 to August 2021 was called to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya yesterday, The Star reported today, citing unnamed sources.

The daily reported the same sources saying that the investigations are centred on some RM300 million allegedly funnelled into Bersatu’s accounts under a Covid-19 stimulus package during the Muhyiddin administration.

Muhyiddin is president of Bersatu and also chairman of the Perikatan Nasional coalition that includes PAS and Gerakan, that now forms the Opposition bloc in Parliament.

However, Muhyiddin is not the federal Opposition leader despite heading the PN coalition, the role is undertaken by its secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin.

According to The Star, the investigation on Bersatu is almost wrapped up and a report will be submitted to the Attorney General for further action.

In a statement to national news agency Bernama yesterday, Muhyiddin denied his involvement in awarding the government project, asserting instead that the allegations against him were malicious and aimed to tarnish his reputation and that of his family.

MACC froze Bersatu’s bank accounts at the end of last month.

On February 10, MACC was reported to be scrutinising the award of a RM1.2 billion government immigration contract to an IT company owned by the son-in-law of an unnamed former prime minister back in May 2022.
