RoS to meet Umno representatives next week about no-contest motion

RoS to meet Umno representatives next week about no-contest motion

The Registrar of Societies has not received a full report on the Umno general assembly.

PETALING JAYA: The Registrar of Societies (RoS) will hold a meeting with Umno representatives next week regarding a motion passed at the party’s general assembly not to have any contests for the top two posts in the upcoming party polls.

This was revealed by its director-general Nawardi Saad, who also said that the RoS has yet to receive a full report about the general assembly held from Jan 11 to 14, Berita Harian reported.

“We have not received the full report yet, but we will be meeting with Umno next week,” he said.

According to Nawardi, the RoS is currently investigating a complaint lodged by two Umno members alleging that the motion violated Umno’s constitution.

“The RoS is aware of the matter (complaint) and we are investigating (it),” he said.

Last Friday, Terengganu Umno member Aizat Fikri Nasir and Negeri Sembilan Umno member Fiqri Firdaus claimed that the tabling of the motion at the recent Umno general assembly had breached Article 10 of the party’s constitution.

“By right, the motion has to be tabled 14 days before the assembly, or seven days if it’s tabled by the Supreme Council,” they said in their letter of complaint.

The motion adopted by the general assembly ensures that party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, will be returned unopposed in the Umno elections, which must be held by May 19.

Last Saturday, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said he plans to meet RoS officials to clear the air about the no-contest motion for the party’s top two posts.

During the meeting, he said the party’s lawyers will help explain how the procedures for proposing and tabling that controversial motion were carried out in accordance with Umno’s constitution.
