PETALING JAYA: A couple who were among the survivors of the tragic Batang Kali landslide met their rescuers from the Civil Defence Force (APM) to thank them for their hard work in helping them and other victims.

The couple had lost their only child in the tragedy but were still grateful to Hilmi Husman, Amin Rosdi and Firdaus Abd Samad for all they did to rescue survivors as well as retrieve the bodies of those who were killed in the tragedy.

In a Facebook post, Selangor APM said the couple met Hilmi, Amin and Firdaus briefly this evening. The three were among the first to arrive at the location after the landslide occurred.

“During the meeting, the couple shared their grief over losing their one and only child, and also shared a video of them celebrating their child’s birthday previously,” the post mentioned.

“The man told the three officers that he was the first person to call the emergency line and recalled how distressed he was when he saw his wife and child trapped in their car.

“He also shared how his wife had asked rescuers to save their child first, but that the officers could not bring themselves to tell her that their child was already dead.”

The post also mentioned how the rescuers had only informed the mother of her child’s death after she and her husband were brought to safety and the situation had stabilised.

Hilmi, who is a captain by rank, described the meeting with the victims as a priceless honour. He added that he had never expected anything in return except for a “thank you” throughout his career as a civil defence officer.

“The couple thanked all rescuers (involved in the search and rescue operation in the landslide). Though they had just lost their child, they have chosen to stay strong and soldier on,” Selangor APM said.

The landslide at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite occurred at 2.42am on Dec 16. Of the 92 persons who were trapped in the disaster, 61 were rescued. The 31 victims who lost their lives comprised 18 adults and 13 children.
