Hadi should repent for his justification of handouts - Umno veteran

Umno Veterans Club secretary Mustapha Yaakub has told PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang to repent over the latter's remark justifying the party’s distribution of cash to voters during the 15th general election (GE15).

This, according to Mustapha, is because the Marang MP is notorious for allegedly using religion for political purposes.

"He once dubbed Umno as kafir (infidel) in his fatwa. Everyone still remembers his remarks about two imams for prayers, and slaughter by Umno people is 'haram'.

"Families broke up and various 'disasters' occurred due to Hadi's fatwa. Thus, the (Umno) veterans are not surprised by Hadi's latest stance regarding corruption, gift, and charity," Mustapha (above) said in a statement.

In 1981, Hadi labelled Umno as kafir (infidel) in his infamous sermon 'Amanat Haji Hadi', which sparked a split among the Malays.

'Apologise, and withdraw fatwa'

Mustapha's statement is in response to Hadi's recent remark that there was nothing wrong in PAS handing out cash to voters during GE15, claiming that it was a charitable act and hence, not prohibited by electoral law.

According to Hadi, existing rules only prohibited contesting candidates and their representatives from giving cash to voters, but it is alright to give alms.

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi dubbed Hadi a hypocrite, as it is charity if the latter did it, but corruption if others do it.

Mustapha then called on Hadi to refrain from issuing statements that can further damage his followers' creed and repent immediately.

He also urged Hadi to apologise and withdraw his fatwa that called Umno 'infidels'.
