PETALING JAYA: The Selangor state government will be donating some RM1 million in cash aid to Kelantan and Terengganu due to the ongoing floods in the east coast states.

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the two states will receive RM500,000 each, adding that it was also ready to deploy humanitarian assistance.

“Selangor expresses sympathy to the people of Kelantan and Terengganu, who have been affected by the floods,” he said in a statement.

Amirudin added that Selangor will be cancelling its state-level New Year’s Eve celebration out of respect for the victims of the floods and the Batang Kali landslide.

The number of flood victims in Terengganu had increased sharply this morning to 37,792, compared with 26,494 people last night. The victims are being housed in 310 relief centres in eight districts.

In Kelantan, the number of evacuees rose to 17,326 people this morning, compared with 14,359 people last night. There are 106 relief centres operating there.

Meanwhile, the death toll in the Batang Kali landslide remains at 24 as of this morning while nine people are still missing.

Of the 94 people who were said to be at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite when the landslide hit last Friday morning, 61 survivors were rescued thanks to the search and rescue operations by the authorities.
