PKR’s Cabinet ‘first-timers’ cause for concern, says Tian Chua

Tian Chua said having PKR’s top two as finance minister and economic affairs minister opens the party to ‘severe criticism’.

PETALING JAYA: Former PKR vice-president Tian Chua has expressed concern that most of the eight ministers Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has named from his party are new.

Apart from Anwar and Rafizi, the other six Cabinet members from PKR are Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (home affairs), Fadhlina Sidek (education), Dr Zaliha Mustafa (health), Chang Lih Kang (science and technology), Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad (natural resources, environment and climate change) and Fahmi Fadzil (digital communications).

Fadhlina and Zaliha are first-term MPs.

Other than Anwar, only Saifuddin has previous experience in federal administration. The PKR secretary-general was the former minister of domestic trade and consumer affairs after PH took over Putrajaya following the 2018 general election (GE14).

“I’m worried as most of the PKR ministers are first-timers,” Tian Chua told FMT.

“They don’t have experience, so I hope their deputies will.”

The former Batu MP, Tian Chua also described Anwar’s move to name himself the finance minister, and Rafizi the economic affairs minister, as a “very risky” move for PKR.

Pakatan Harapan chairman Anwar is the PKR president while Rafizi is PKR’s deputy president.

“They must prove that they can bring positive changes, otherwise other parties will severely criticise them,” said Tian Chua.

The political composition of the Cabinet is: Pakatan Harapan (15 seats) through PKR, DAP, Amanah and Upko; Barisan Nasional (6) through Umno; Gabungan Parti Sarawak (5) through PBB, PRS and PDP; and Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (1) through Sabah Bersatu.
