New senators, merged ministries, and other changes in cabinet line-up
As Malaysians take in the new cabinet line-up announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, a number of key developments have occurred.
This includes a number of ministries that have not been named and are likely to be either merged or disbanded, such as the art ministry, housing ministry, federal territories ministry, and the special functions minister.
The Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry, which will be led by Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, was renamed from its previous moniker which included Energy and water resources.
The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry now becomes the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, which is helmed by Salahuddin Ayub.
In the new administration, 15 of the ministers are from Pakatan Harapan, six are from BN, five are from GPS and one is from GRS in Sabah while there is one non-politician, Na’im Mokhtar, who is appointed religious affairs minister.
Notably, the BN ministers do not include anyone from MCA or MIC, Umno’s junior partners in the BN coalition.
Aside from Na’im, three others named as minister by Anwar - Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Zambry Kadir, and Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz - were defeated candidates in the recent GE15 and will have to rely on being sworn in as senators.
