Guan Eng dismisses call for politicians facing graft charges to sit out polls
DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng is accused of corruption in connection with the undersea tunnel project in Penang.
KUALA LUMPUR: DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng has brushed off a call by an anti-graft NGO for politicians facing corruption charges to sit out the coming polls.
Lim, who will be defending his Bagan parliamentary seat in the 15th general election (GE15), said he would leave it to the voters to decide his fate.
The former Penang chief minister, who is accused of corruption in connection with the undersea tunnel project, said the case against him was baseless.
“For myself, there is no money trail, so I think that is where we want to let the voters decide,” Lim told reporters at a function here.
He was asked to comment on the Center to Combat Corruption & Cronyism’s (C4) assertion that politicians facing corruption charges in court should not contest in the coming general election.
These politicians, C4 chairman Edmund Terence Gomez said, should clear their names before standing for election.
Gomez also said that apart from Lim, others such as the presidents of Umno and Muda – Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman respectively – should also sit out the polls.
