Najib's son looks set to be BN Pekan candidate

Pekan Umno Youth chief Mohd Nizar Najib, the eldest son of former premier Najib Abdul Razak, has shown clearer signs of a possible nomination as BN's 15th general election candidate with an increased presence in the parliamentary seat.

This follows a diminishing chance for Najib as the incumbent MP to defend his seat while in jail, pending any decision for a royal pardon.

Fuelling speculations, administrators for Najib's official Facebook shared a video of Nizar vowing to continue his father's service in Pekan, as well as sharing his career move into joining active politics.

On the ground, Nizar was seen assisting the Pekan Umno division's GE15 machinery.

Within Umno, a party source told Malaysiakini that it is "almost certain" for Nizar to be named as BN's candidate in Pekan as Najib's aura remained strong even from behind bars.

"I can say it is almost certain that Nizar will replace Najib in Pekan. He has long been actively involved with his father as the youth chief.

"That gives an advantage for Nizar to contest in Pekan. What's more, the 'bossku' aura is still strong in the area," said the source.

"His name has also been nominated for the previous Chini by-election.”

Previously, Utusan Malaysia quoted Pekan Umno chief Zamri Ramly as saying that the party does not plan to field any of Najib's children - Nizar or his sister, Nooryana Najwa - and instead nominated five other names including Najib.

Najib is serving a 12-year jail term following the apex court on Aug 23 dismissing his appeal against his conviction in the RM42 million SRC case.

However, Najib’s legal team had then filed an application for a different Federal Court panel to review the apex court’s decision, which will be heard on Jan 19, Jan 20 and Jan 26 next year.
