Amirudin to stand in Gombak?

Amirudin to stand in Gombak?

Former allies Amirudin Shari and Azmin Ali are set to clash for the Gombak seat.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari is likely to contest the Gombak parliamentary seat in the coming 15th general election, according to two PKR leaders in the know.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, one of the leaders expressed confidence that Amirudin would be “in Parliament” in the near future.

“He is capable and has the track record to prove it, from the time he was an assemblyman in 2008 to him serving as an executive councillor and now menteri besar of the state,” the source said.

According to the source, the division is also unanimous in nominating Amirudin as a candidate for Gombak.

Earlier today, Azmin Ali had indicated that he would defend the Gombak parliamentary seat in GE15, saying he was prepared to continue serving Gombak constituents.

Azmin has served as Gombak MP for three terms. In the last general election in 2018, the former PKR deputy president won with a 48,721-vote majority.

In February 2020, he led 10 PKR MPs to defect to Bersatu, in what has come to be known as the Sheraton Move.

Last month, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim said the party would go all-out to reclaim constituencies from those who won under its ticket prior to jumping ship.

Meanwhile, Selangor PKR deputy communications director and Gombak PKR treasurer Zainol Abidin Mohamed said fielding Amirudin in Gombak would be a wise choice by Pakatan Harapan.

Gombak voters have always backed Pakatan Harapan and the then opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, since 2008, he said.

“Gombak is a PH stronghold. And Amirudin would be a perfect choice to help reverse the betrayal from the Sheraton Move.”
