Teng: Johor DAP boss suffering from Streisand effect

DAP veteran Teng Chang Khim today lashed out at Johor DAP leader Liew Chin Tong for a purported clumsy attempt to hide the latter's ambitions.

Earlier today, Liew (above, right) appeared at a forum in Skudai, Johor where he announced his hope that he would be fielded as a candidate to run for a Parliament seat.

As Liew is currently the Perling assemblyperson, he would require special consideration by the party leadership to run as a parliamentary candidate.

He refused to divulge which seat he was eyeing because candidate selection was the prerogative of the party leadership.

However, Teng pointed out that Liew's decision to have DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang at the forum belied his true intent.

Lim, 81, is the two-term Iskandar Puteri MP. He had previously announced that he will be retiring from politics at the end of his term.

After the forum made news, Teng responded on his Facebook page to criticise Liew, without naming the latter.

The veteran party leader said he had previously decided not to comment on politics but given the developments, he could not hold back.

Backing from Lim?

Teng implied that by making such an announcement in Lim's presence, Liew must have had the backing to do so.

Moreover, Skudai, where the event took place, is located within the Iskandar Puteri constituency.

"Why are you being so coy? Why are you pretending you don't know which seat you are eyeing?

"It's like (the Chinese idiom) 'there are no 300 taels of silver here'. This sort of hypocrisy is unprecedented," he said.

The Chinese idiom used by Teng could be loosely translated as the "Streisand effect", an act of suppressing information unintentionally increasing awareness of that information.

He said if Liew was indeed not aiming for Iskandar Puteri, he should deny it.

"Even under the pain of death, no one will believe you will do so," wrote Teng.
