Stop shooting ourselves in the foot, Khalid tells PH
Amanah communications director Khalid Samad said Pakatan Harapan should focus on its competitors and avoid internal squabbles going public.
PETALING JAYA: Amanah communications director Khalid Samad has urged Pakatan Harapan to “stop shooting ourselves in the foot” with squabbles in public.
He said any misunderstandings should be discussed at the coalition’s presidential council. The council comprises leaders of the component parties, PKR, DAP, Amanah and Upko.
Khalid said some misunderstandings between PH leaders had gone public, adding that this should not be the case. “We have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot,” he said.
Instead, PH should focus on the coalition’s competitors, Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional, and “show the public our ability to win at the coming general election”, he said at a Pakatan Harapan rally yesterday evening.
Khalid said it was time for the coalition to discuss strategies on how to win the next general election.
PKR central leadership council member Romli Ishak, speaking at the same event, said the public has lost confidence in the country’s politics.
“This should not be the case as the public has a role to choose their leaders who are capable of leading the country. If we don’t care about politics, it will destroy the country,” he said.
He urged PH leaders to campaign in other states and provide examples of what has been done in Selangor through its policies. “This will prove that we are a much better government,” he said, as Selangor has become a strong state governed by the coalition.
“We are strong in Selangor. However, we should not only win in this state as we won’t be able to have federal governmental control,” he said.
Pakatan Harapan holds 103 seats in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat and controls the state governments of Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
The next general election is not due until mid-September 2023 if Parliament carries on until its term expires in July next year.
However, BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan said this week the best time for fresh elections would be October or early November. Mohamad said the budget could be tabled earlier, to avoid holding elections at the end of November and December during the monsoon flood season.
