PETALING JAYA: The Ipoh High Court has sentenced Tronoh assemblyman Paul Yong to 13 years’ jail and two strokes of the rotan for raping his former maid, reports Bernama.

This comes after the court found him guilty of rape, with judge Abdul Wahab Mohamed ruling that the prosecution had proved the elements of the charge through the witnesses who testified in court.

Yong, a former state executive councillor, had been charged with raping the woman in a room at his house in Meru Desa Park between 8.15pm and 9.15pm on July 9, 2019.

He had pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 376 (1) of the Penal Code.

The court granted the request by Yong’s lawyer, Rajpal Singh, for the sentence to be stayed pending his appeal.

Yong was allowed bail of RM30,000 in one surety and his passport was surrendered to the court.

On Dec 7, the former DAP man was told to enter his defence on the rape charge after the court ruled that the prosecution successfully proved a prima facie case against him.

The prosecution was led by Perak prosecution director Azlina Rasdi, who was aided by deputy public prosecutors Liyana Zawani Mohd Radzi and Fitri Sadaruddin, during the proceedings.
