Wee hits back at Chin Tong over congestion issue

The transport ministry cannot be solely blamed for traffic congestion, says the minister, Wee Ka Siong.

PETALING JAYA: Transport minister Wee Ka Siong has hit back at Johor DAP chief Liew Chin Tong for criticising him for his alleged poor policy-making in alleviating traffic congestion.

“He can say what he likes, but he took my words out of context,” Wee told reporters after yesterday’s Barisan Nasional Convention, adding that Liew’s statement had only caused confusion among the public.

Liew was commenting on two statements made by Wee – that there were too many vehicles on the road, and that the government was considering increasing fares for public transport.

Wee said it was unfair to pin the blame for traffic congestion in the country on the transport ministry.

He said construction work throughout the Klang Valley was bound to cause inconvenience to commuters, but development and road projects were not under the transport ministry but the works ministry.

He said city planning fell under the city councils while enforcement of road use was not solely the responsibility of the transport ministry but the police as well.

“The management of traffic flow is not under the transport ministry, but the blame continues to be put on it,” he said.

He said the ministry was doing its best to resolve the congestion issue.

  1. The Transport Minister should get out of the kitchen if he cannot stand the heat.
