KUALA LUMPUR: An Umno Supreme Council member and deputy minister has called for Tengku Zafrul Aziz to be replaced as the finance minister over the 5G rollout by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB).

Zahidi Zainul Abidin claimed that Tengku Zafrul, who is rumoured to be eyeing a parliamentary seat at the next general election, had challenged him to a “fight”.

He said the challenge came after he sought an an explanation about DNB, the government company set up to handle the 5G rollout.

Zahidi said that Tengku Zafrul “seemed angry” at him and refused to listen to the concerns he was raising.

He then told Tengku Zafrul that he was representing the Umno Supreme Council and Umno Youth. “He said ‘if you want to fight, we can fight’. That was his response,” Zahidi said.

Earlier this week, Umno Youth lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission calling for an investigation into the rollout of the 5G network, and demanding that DNB reveal the actual costs of the rollout and a detailed explanation on wholesale rates for telecommunication companies.

DNB is setting up the infrastructure for 5G technology, and is the sole wholesale supplier to the phone companies.
