Johor MB urged to stop political drama over Pulau Batu Puteh

Haniff Khatri Abdulla says Onn Hafiz Ghazi should realise that the task force set up by an Umno leader was delaying its findings.

PETALING JAYA: Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi was urged today to “stop the political drama” by calling for legal action against those responsible for the loss of sovereignty over Pulau Batu Puteh.

Onn’s call could mislead the public, says lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla, who is viewed as an ally of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Haniff said: “It was such an undignified statement, coming from a Johor leader. It was Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is from his party (Umno), that set up the task force which is delaying its findings on the case.”

Ismail formed a special task force in October last year to obtain views of international legal experts on Malaysia’s request to review a decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to award sovereignty over Pulau Batu Puteh to Singapore.

Onn had said yesterday that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had set a bad precedent in 2018 by withdrawing an application to review the decision of the ICJ.

Mahathir was then prime minister as head of the PH-led government.

“Legal action should be taken against this betrayal,” said Onn as the court had held that the island had once been part of the Johor sultanate.

“The question now is, who advised the government to make such reckless decisions,” said Onn in a debate at the state assembly.

The sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar had also recently expressed disappointment over the government’s decision.
