Annuar says more Umno leaders will be sacked

Annuar Musa says Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s removal from the party’s Supreme Council will lead to a party crisis and a rift.

PETALING JAYA: The Umno leadership’s decision to remove Tajuddin Abdul Rahman from the party’s Supreme Council will spark a crisis in the party and cause a rift, a Kelantan Umno leader said.

Annuar Musa said it was understood that several others in the party had been branded as political enemies of the party leadership. “And they will be sacked,” he said in an online posting this evening.

Annuar, who is Keterah Umno division chief, said that even though there were provisions for the party president to remove a Supreme Council member, such actions would not augur well for Umno.

It was also one that was rarely executed by any Umno president, he said. That included Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was president from 1981 to 2003.

Even during Mahathir’s time “ministers, deputy ministers and Supreme Council members who had challenged him openly would not be dropped because they did not support the president,” said Annuar.

Annuar, who was sacked as Barisan Nasional secretary-general last year, said he expected other party leaders to be removed in the wake of Tajuddin’s removal.

Tajuddin is one of 13 people appointed by the party president to the Supreme Council.

Earlier today Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Tajuddin was dropped from the Supreme Council as he had been critical of the party. However, Zahid did not elaborate.

Tajuddin, who is MP for Pasir Salak, has been appointed Malaysia’s ambassador to Indonesia.

Yesterday, social media users circulated a letter on Tajuddin’s removal, dated June 21, with Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan thanking the controversial MP for his services rendered.

Political analysts have described Tajuddin’s removal as a “warning” to Ismail Sabri Yaakob and those aligned to him.

Ismail, an Umno vice-president, is prime minister of a coalition government supported by Bersatu and PAS, with whom Zahid has had a falling-out. Annuar serves in Ismail’s cabinet as communications and multimedia minister.
