Najib rubbishes latest attempt to link him to alleged corrupt submarines deal

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29, 2022: Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has dismissed the latest attempt to accuse him of being involved in corrupt practices over the country’s procurement of submarines from France.

He pointed out in a Facebook post that the former Pakatan Harapan (PH) government had in 2018 tried but failed to find any evidence that he was involved in such a bribery scandal.

He said the latest corruption allegation against him was similar to PH’s previous unsuccessful effort to tarnish his image by linking him with the 2006 murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu

Najib explained that despite him being the defence minister in 2002 when the deal was signed to buy the French submarines, it was Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, as the country’s prime minister at that time, who made the US$1.2 billion purchase.

“It was not me who negotiated the deal. It was the fourth prime minister (Dr Mahathir) who selected the submarines and negotiated the deal,” he said.

Malaysia had bought two Scorpene-class submarines and one Agosta submarine from French defence equipment manufacturing group Thales.

A recent report that Thales had been charged with complicity in alleged bribery over the purchase of the submarines has prompted opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to demand for Malaysians involved in such a scandal be brought to justice.
