Tok Mat tells why GE15 is best held this year

Mohamad Hasan said GE15 should be held soon as the current crop of non-Umno ministers were incapable of solving certain issues.

PETALING JAYA: Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan says the “best window” for Umno to contest a general election is before the third quarter of this year.

He said the party would benefit most within this time frame because of the “feel-good factor” after confidence-boosting wins at the Melaka and Johor elections, a disjointed opposition, and the presence of ministers incapable of solving national issues.

Mohamad, who is Umno’s election director, said party members should not be annoyed by him talking about early elections.

“That (planning for elections) is my basic task. Don’t be angry if I talk about it … And don’t think that I am pushing for this because I want to be prime minister,” he said on an Agenda Awani programme earlier tonight.

“If I don’t plan for the party, then who will? It’s me and my committee, my war room. Plan and inform the party ‘This is it … In this window’,” he said.

“Because for me … the best window for us to enter a general election is until the third quarter of this year, based on various factors that I don’t want to repeat again,” added Mohamad, who is better known as Tok Mat.

A push for an early general election was a constant theme at Umno’s general assembly which ended today.

Earlier today, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who is prime minister, said the party’s top five leaders would discuss any decision to request a dissolution of Parliament to pave the way for GE15.

He also said the Umno leadership would provide their views before he, as prime minister, seeks the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to dissolve Parliament. The current term ends in July next year.

Mohamad said there was a need for early elections as the current crop of ministers did not seem capable of solving issues such as food shortages and the rising cost of materials.

“The Umno ministers are performing well, but we are not an Umno government. There are many other elements,” he said.

“Other ministers are not performing well. I don’t want to say who … But the cost of living is rising … Construction material is up 30-40% … We cannot find eggs (for sale). But I don’t see steps being done to counter this.”
