Farhash: I'll step aside if Saifuddin goes for PKR deputy president

Speculation as to whether Anwar Ibrahim's former political secretary, Farhash Wafa Salvador will contest for the post of deputy president in the upcoming PKR election has finally been answered.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, Farhash said he was ready to give way to Saifuddin Nasution Ismail if the PKR secretary-general were to contest for the party's second-highest post.

“I give my support to Saifuddin Nasution to contest for the post of deputy president if he intends to run for the post.

"If Saifuddin contests for deputy president, then I will contest one of the vice-president posts," he said.

The former Perak PKR chairperson, however, said that if there was no competition for the deputy president post, he was fully prepared to take on Rafizi Ramli who has thrown his hat in the ring.

Previously, the three prominent PKR leaders were expected to compete in a three-cornered contest for the post of deputy president.

Saifuddin is expected to make an announcement on the matter soon.

The deputy president post is still unfilled after its incumbent Mohamed Azmin Ali left PKR through the infamous 'Sheraton Move' in Feb 2020 which saw the Pakatan Harapan government collapse after 22 months of ruling the country.

Rafizi Ramli

Rafizi, who was a former Pandan MP, lost a fierce contest for the deputy president post to Azmin in the 2018 PKR election.

Despite his defeat, he was appointed vice president but later decided not to be active in politics.

However, Rafizi recently announced he would return to the political arena after Harapan and PKR's failure in four state elections, with the latest being in Johor.

Not going on vacation

The latest development prompted Saifuddin to issue a statement that when there was a betrayal in PKR, some of the party's leaders chose to go on holiday.

Rafizi has established a reputation as an outspoken PKR leader and had on several occasions openly criticized the party's decision.

Meanwhile, Farhash said he would still fight as part of PKR's struggle regardless of the election results in May.

“I’m not the type to sulk or leave friends when it’s hard.

"For me, PKR is a democratic party that gives equal opportunities to all.

"Whatever the outcome of the election, I will remain with the party and go down to the ground to strengthen the party. I will never take leave," he said in an apparent reference to the move taken by Rafizi earlier.
