PKR leaders hit back at Mukhriz's comments on Anwar's leadership

Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim has struck back against Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir's remarks about Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim's viability as a future prime minister.

He pointed to Anwar's position at the head of a coalition with many more MPs than Pejuang and the fact that Mukhriz himself never completed a single term as menteri besar.

"As 'weak' as Mukhriz has made Anwar out to be by saying that Anwar's time has passed, Anwar is still the PKR president, Harapan chairperson, and opposition leader in parliament.

"Meanwhile, as mighty as Mukhriz is as a son of nobility, it doesn't hide the fact that he was overthrown twice as Kedah menteri besar halfway through his terms.

"Mukhriz has never held the post of Kedah menteri besar from beginning to end like other menteri besar," said Hassan in a statement today.

He said he is not fond of making scathing remarks like this, but Mukhriz needs to be on the receiving end of such remarks for being "rude and uncouth".

"The hand that dares to draw the keris must be prepared to be stabbed by his own weapon," he said.

Hassan's views were echoed by Perak PKR chief Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak and party communications director Fahmi Fadzil.

Farhash claimed that the same could be said for Mukhriz and Mahathir, who are "not doing any better" than how Mukhriz had portrayed Anwar.

"I totally dismiss the comments made by Mukhriz because Anwar just came out of prison, and the 15th general election will be an election where he will lead Harapan.

"You cannot comment too early because before this, he was still in prison.

"No, of course, we didn't do too well at the last two state elections (in Malacca and Sarawak) but you know, politics is very fluid. Things change overnight," Farhash told Malaysiakini.

Electoral understanding between Harapan, Pejuang

Meanwhile, Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil said Mukhriz's remarks were akin to Harapan trying to dictate what will happen within Pejuang.

"So, I think this is not within Mukhriz's right to say. You know, he can say whatever he wants, (but) the decision is Pakatan Harapan's to make," he said.

These statements came after Mukhriz's interview with radio station BFM 89.9 yesterday, where he said that the Port Dickson MP's time had 'passed' and that it was time for a new set of people to take over.

He had raised this when asked if he had "any issues" with Anwar being Harapan's prime minister candidate after he said Pejuang would not discount the possibility of a pact with Harapan.

On the possibility of a pact between Pejuang and Harapan in the next general election, Fahmi remarked that he believed there could be electoral understanding.

"I think we have to look at all possibilities. I think (the various) parties have our respective strengths in different areas.

"Having gone through what we went through in Malacca (and) in Sarawak, it is in no party's interest - as particularly in the opposition - to see overlapping claims or clashes in certain seats.

"This is my personal opinion that there can be some kind of understanding.

"It may not necessarily be in the form of a pact, but at least some kind of electoral understanding in order for us to ensure that we have the best shot at returning to Putrajaya," said the Lembah Pantai MP.

Meanwhile, Farhash claimed that while Pejuang chose not to "play ball", he felt that anything could happen and that it was better for both parties to work together.

According to Mukhriz, Pejuang plans to field 120 candidates for the next parliamentary election.

He said potential partners now include Warisan and Muda, to whom Pejuang is "very close".

Should Pejuang form another coalition, it will be the fourth prominent coalition at the national level after BN, Harapan, and Perikatan Nasional.
