PETALING JAYA: A former tahfiz school principal was charged today with 15 counts of committing physical and non-physical sexual assault against five of his students last year.

Azizul Yahya, 30, pleaded not guilty to all the charges read to him before judge Norita Mohd Ardani in the sessions court in Ipoh, Perak.

Azizul is alleged to have committed the offences against his students, aged between 12 and 15, at the Maahad Tahfiz in Batu Gajah.

He was charged with 14 counts of physical sexual assault, including kissing, forcing his victims to perform oral sex on him and caressing their private parts.

He also faces a charge of committing non-physical sexual assault by showing a pornographic video to one of his students.

He was charged under Section 14 (a), Section 14 (b), Section 14 (d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carry a maximum 20 years of imprisonment with whipping if convicted, and under Section 15 (e), under which he can be jailed up to 10 years or fined up to RM20,000, or both, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Afiqa Liyana Rozman did not offer bail on the grounds that the offences involved five underage students, and were serious.

“The accused lives at the Maahad Tahfiz where all the victims are still schooling and staying there as well,” he said, according to a New Straits Times report.

“If bail is allowed, there is fear that the accused will intimidate the witnesses, especially the victims.”

However, Azizul’s counsel, Muhamad Syahrul Nizam Mohd Rabi, requested that bail be allowed, telling the court that his client was no longer staying or working at the school.

Judge Norita did not set bail and fixed Feb 23 for document submissions and mention.
